Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, June 18th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As you know, we have heavy hearts today saying farewell to Father Logan Parrish. It has been such a joy to experience the Priesthood of Christ through him these past two years. We invite you to join us in thanking him for his service to our parish with a cake and ice cream reception after the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Masses in front of the Marian grotto (or, in event of rain, in the church basement).

We look forward to welcoming our new parochial vicar, Father Brian Florin, next Sunday, June 25th. We will have a welcome reception for him on Sunday, July 9th following the 1 p.m. Mass.

This Thursday, Father Florin and I will gather with other priests whose parishes have participated in the Next Generation Parish initiative, through which we crafted the Parish Priority Plan that we’ve been working to implement the past two years. We will be kicking off the evaluation phase, taking a look at how we’ve done implementing our plan.

Next Saturday, June 24th, is the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. In addition to being an extremely important saint for the whole Church, he is the patron of Puebla, Mexico, the birthplace of many of our parishioners. There will be a special Mass in Spanish to celebrate this solemnity at 12 p.m. on the 24th.

It was sad not being able to have our Eucharistic procession due to the rain last Sunday, but the time of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament together as a parish that we had instead was a really beautiful experience. Thank you to everyone who stayed to adore the Lord in the Eucharist and to our choirs for the beautiful music.

Registrations for religious education are now open. We are thankful for everyone’s patience as we implemented a new online system that will save our staff a lot of time and will give us a comprehensive database for our religious education program for the first time. This marks an important step toward our parish’s priority of Unity as we implement systems that have common requirements for our English and Spanish-language programs. We have been working as well towards charging no fees for parish programs for all registered and contributing parishioners. Last year, we eliminated the fee for Religious Education for everyone who is registered and contributing. After giving a lot of advanced notice, this year we are asking that anyone who has still chosen not to register and to contribute to the weekly collection to pay the entire cost per child of attending religious education (similar to how for many years those who did not contribute weekly paid the full cost of attending our parish school). We recognize that this might have come as a surprise to some people who were not as attentive to our repeated reminders. But it is simply a matter of justice that parishioners who do contribute on a regular basis should not have to subsidize a program for people who choose not to contribute.

Recent read: Unconditional Surrender by Evelyn Waugh. This is the third volume in Waugh’s trilogy set in the Second World War. At times it is a hilarious satire, at other times a deeply tragic lament for a world that Waugh is watching disappear.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Como saben, hoy tenemos mucha tristeza al despedirnos del Padre Logan Parrish. Ha sido un gran gozo experimentar el sacerdocio de Cristo a través de él estos últimos dos años. Lo invitamos a unirse a nosotros para agradecerle por su servicio a nuestra parroquia con una recepción de pastel y helado después de las Misas de 11 a.m. y la 1 p.m. frente a la gruta Mariana (o, en caso de lluvia, en el sótano de la iglesia).

Esperamos dar la bienvenida a nuestro nuevo vicario parroquial, el Padre Brian Florín, el próximo domingo, 25 de junio. Tendremos una recepción de bienvenida para él el domingo, 9 de julio después de la misa de la 1 p.m.

Este jueves, el Padre Florin y yo nos reuniremos con otros sacerdotes cuyas parroquias han participado en la iniciativa Parroquial de Próxima Generación, a través de la cual elaboramos el Plan de Prioridad Parroquial que hemos estado trabajando para implementar los últimos dos años. Comenzaremos la fase de evaluación, echando un vistazo a cómo hemos implementado nuestro plan.

El próximo sábado, 24 de junio, es la Solemnidad de la Natividad de San. Juan el Bautista. Además de ser un santo extremadamente importante para toda la Iglesia, es el patrón de Puebla, México, el lugar de nacimiento de muchos de nuestros feligreses. Habrá una misa especial en español para celebrar esta solemnidad a las 12 p.m. el día 24º.

Las inscripciones para la educación religiosa (catequesis) para el próximo año están disponibles. Estamos agradecidos por la paciencia de todos al implementar un nuevo sistema en línea que ahorrará a nuestro personal mucho tiempo y nos dará una base de datos completa para nuestro programa de educación religiosa por primera vez. Esto marca un paso importante hacia la prioridad de Unidad de nuestra parroquia al implementar sistemas que tienen requisitos comunes para nuestros programas en inglés y en español. También hemos estado trabajando para no cobrar honorarios por los programas parroquiales para todos los feligreses registrados y contribuyentes. El año pasado, eliminamos la cuota de educación religiosa para todos los que están registrados y contribuyendo. Después de dar mucha anticipación, este año estamos pidiendo que cualquier persona que haya elegido no registrarse y contribuir a la colecta semanal pague el costo total por niño de asistir a la educación religiosa (similar aquellos que no contribuyeron semanalmente y pagaron el costo total de asistir a nuestra escuela parroquial durante muchos años). Reconocemos que esto podría haber sido una sorpresa para algunas personas que no estuvieron tan atentas a nuestros repetidos recordatorios. Pero es simplemente una cuestión de justicia que los feligreses que contribuyen regularmente no tengan que subsidiar un programa para las personas que eligen no contribuir
