Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, July 2nd

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are happy to welcome back Father Christopher Grodecki, S.J. today to celebrate the Masses in English. I am grateful to Father Grodecki for his help so that I can spend some time with my family this weekend, and to be able to count on Father Florin while I am gone.

On Tuesday, July 4th, there will be one Mass in English at 9 a.m. preceded by confessions from 8:30 – 8:50 a.m. (our normal holiday schedule).

This week, we are thankful for all those who won the rights of freedom for our country. I think of my 5x great grandfather who fought in the Revolutionary War, and all those who continue serving our country in the military and civil service. The greatness of this country cannot be preserved, though, solely by military might and efficient government. It is the virtue and moral quality of our citizens that will make or break American greatness in the third millennium.

This was known to the Founding Fathers of the United States. John Adams wrote: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Another founding father, Patrick Henry, says it in greater detail: “Bad men cannot make good citizens. It is when a people forget God that tyrants forge their chains. A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom. No free government, or the blessings of liberty, can be preserved to any people but by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality, and virtue; and by a frequent recurrence to fundamental principles.”

None of us can assume that anyone else will do the hard work necessary of ensuring our country’s future as a moral, virtuous, and just people. Our sacred responsibility before God this day is to commit ourselves to cultivating virtue and public morality in our families, communities, and the entire nation. Furthermore, while this is a week filled with many celebrations, the authentically Catholic instinct is for every celebration to be preceded by a season or day of fasting and penance. What works of penance could you offer for the return of our country to its Christian principles?

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Estamos felices de dar la bienvenida al Padre Christopher Grodecki, S.J. hoy para celebrar las misas en inglés. Agradezco al Padre Grodecki su ayuda para que pueda pasar algún tiempo con mi familia este fin de semana y poder contar con el Padre Florin mientras estoy fuera.

El martes, 4 de julio, habrá una misa en inglés a las 9 a.m. precedida por confesiones de 8:30 a 8:50 a.m. (nuestro horario normal de vacaciones).

Esta semana, estamos agradecidos por todos aquellos que ganaron los derechos de libertad para nuestro país. Pienso en mi cinco veces bisabuelo que luchó en la Guerra Revolucionaria, y todos aquellos que siguen sirviendo a nuestro país en el servicio militar y civil. Sin embargo, la grandeza de este país no puede ser preservada únicamente por el poder militar y el gobierno eficiente. Es la virtud y la calidad moral de nuestros ciudadanos lo que hará o romperá la grandeza estadounidense en el tercer milenio.

Esto era conocido por los Padres Fundadores de los Estados Unidos. John Adams escribió: “Nuestra Constitución fue hecha solo para un pueblo moral y religioso. Es totalmente inadecuado para el gobierno de cualquier otro”.

Ninguno de nosotros puede asumir que alguien más hará el duro trabajo necesario para asegurar el futuro de nuestro país como un pueblo moral, virtuoso y justo. Nuestra sagrada responsabilidad ante Dios este día es comprometernos a cultivar la virtud y la moral pública en nuestras familias, comunidades y toda la nación. Además, si bien esta es una semana llena de muchas celebraciones, el instinto auténticamente católico es que cada celebración sea precedida por una temporada o día de ayuno y penitencia. ¿Qué obras de penitencia podrías ofrecer para el regreso de nuestro país a sus principios cristianos?
