Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, September 17th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Four years ago, we changed our daily Mass and confession schedule to allow for a more consistent availability of the Eucharist and Confession, as well as to make it easier for people who work in the mornings to come to a weekday Mass in English. This change was made possible by having our two priests have two different weekdays as their day off. (Since we work on the weekends, each priest has one day off a week during the week.) As with many changes, it was hard to predict what the drawbacks of having our priests gone on two different days would be. It has been very difficult these past four years to have both of our priests present for any parish activities or meetings, and it has been difficult for them to work together and spend time together when they are at the parish at the same time for such a little time and so frequently busy, especially in the evenings. (I am gone Sunday and Monday evenings, the parochial vicar would be good Wednesday and Thursday evenings, we save Tuesdays for priestly fraternity in the rectory, and weekends are particularly hectic.) This means that the parochial vicar often does not get a good introduction to how the parish operates, which is essential for his preparation to be a pastor. Further, a healthy relationship between a pastor and the parochial vicar is important for a well-functioning parish, and to have that strong relationship they need to be able to spend time together. For that reason, both of our priests are now taking their day off on Monday. This also helps them spend time with other priests, almost all of whom also have Monday as their day off, since strong priestly friendships and brotherhood are absolutely essential for us to be able to persevere in this vocation for the rest of our lives (and into eternity!).

In order for this to be a true day of rest, we will no longer be able to have Masses or confessions on Mondays. This was the case at our parish for many years, and it is still the case at many parishes. Fortunately, in our area, two of our neighboring parishes do have a Monday morning Mass – St. Vincent in Elkhart at 7 a.m. and St. Mary in Bristol at 9 a.m. Without any further modifications, this would leave us with five Masses in English and three Masses in Spanish on weekdays, which would be out of balance. We instituted the Wednesday evening Mass in English four years ago, and while it was popular at first, its popularity has waned significantly over the past few years. It is often the case that there are actually more Spanish-speakers at this Mass than English-speakers. While we would like to be able to offer an evening weekday Mass in English, it is not possible for us to do everything that we would like to do, and we need to be mindful that compromise is especially necessary in such a diverse community. I hope that I can count on your understanding. This change will be effective on October 1st.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Hace cuatro años, cambiamos nuestro horario de Misa diaria y confesión para permitir una disponibilidad más consistente de la Eucaristía y la confesión, así como para facilitar que las personas que trabajan por las mañanas asistan a una Misa entre semana en inglés. Este cambio fue posible gracias a que nuestros dos sacerdotes tenían su día libre diferente durante la semana. (Como trabajamos los fines de semana, cada sacerdote tiene un día libre durante la semana) Al igual que con muchos cambios, era difícil predecir cuáles serían los inconvenientes de tener a nuestros sacerdotes fuera en dos días diferentes. Ha sido muy difícil estos últimos cuatro años tener a nuestros dos sacerdotes presentes para cualquier actividad o reunión parroquial, y ha sido difícil para ellos trabajar juntos y pasar tiempo juntos cuando están en la parroquia al mismo tiempo durante tan poco tiempo y tan frecuentemente ocupados, especialmente en las noches. (Yo me voy los domingos y lunes por la noche, el vicario parroquial se iba los miércoles y jueves por la noche, los martes los guardamos para la fraternidad sacerdotal en la rectoría, y los fines de semana son muy ajetreados). Esto significa que el vicario parroquial a menudo no recibe una buena introducción sobre cómo funciona la parroquia, lo cual es esencial para su preparación para ser párroco. Además, una relación saludable entre un pastor y el vicario parroquial es importante para que la parroquia funcione bien, y para tener esa relación sólida necesitan poder pasar tiempo juntos. Por esa razón, nuestros dos sacerdotes ahora se están tomando su día libre los lunes. Esto también les ayuda a pasar tiempo con otros sacerdotes, la mayoría también tiene el lunes como su día libre, puesto que las amistades sacerdotales y la fraternidad son absolutamente esenciales para que podamos perseverar esta vocación por el resto de nuestras vidas (¡y hasta la eternidad!).

Para que esto sea un verdadero día de descanso, ya no podremos tener misas ni confesiones los lunes. Durante muchos años este fue el caso en nuestra parroquia, y sigue siendo el caso en muchas parroquias. Afortunadamente, en nuestra área, dos parroquias vecinas tienen una misa los lunes por la mañana: San Vicente en Elkhart a las 7 a.m. y Santa María en Bristol a las 9 a.m. Sin más modificaciones, esto nos dejaría con cinco misas en inglés y tres misas en español durante la semana, lo cual estaría fuera de equilibrio. Instituimos la misa del miércoles por la tarde en inglés hace cuatro años, y aunque al principio era popular, eso disminuyó significativamente en los últimos años. A menudo se da el caso de que hay más hispanohablantes en esta Misa que angloparlantes. Si bien nos gustaría poder ofrecer una misa nocturna en inglés durante la semana, pero no es posible para nosotros hacer todo lo que nos gustaría hacer, y tenemos que ser conscientes de que el compromiso es especialmente necesario en una comunidad tan diversa. Espero poder contar con su comprensión. Este cambio entrará en vigor el 1 de octubre.
