Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, May 14th
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Congratulations to the children who received the Body and Blood of the Lord for the first time in Holy Communion yesterday. Please pray for these children, that their hearts might be completely inflamed with love for Jesus Christ truly present in the Eucharist, and that their parents, family members, and friends might be inspired by their example of devotion. It has been such a joy to celebrate with these children and their families these past two weeks!
This Saturday, Caleb Kruse and his classmate, Oscar Duarte, will be ordained to the Diaconate at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne at 11 a.m. You will remember that Caleb spent last summer with us here at St. John’s. Please remember to pray for him on Saturday! If you are able to go to Fort Wayne for the ordination Mass, I can assure you that you will not regret it. There are few liturgies more moving and beautiful than an ordination Mass. If you have a son whom you’ve thought might be thinking about the possibility of a priestly vocation, it would make an especially great family outing!
We recently applied for a grant to assist in covering the costs of renovating our new parish office building from the Mary Cross Tippmann Foundation, which assists many charitable institutions in our Diocese. We were thrilled to receive the full amount we requested: $65,000. This was our “funding gap” between the total expected cost of the project and the amount we could prudently withdraw from savings at this time. The foundation is named for Mary Cross Tippmann, the mother of the entrepreneurial Tippmann family, whose son John’s businesses tithe profits into the foundation and then use them to promote Catholic education, pro-life initiatives, and service to the poor. I’m sure that they would appreciate a prayer for the repose of her soul in appreciation of this grant.
The Indiana state budget that passed two weeks ago included a significant expansion of the School Choice scholarship program. The income guidelines have been expanded such that the great majority of families now qualify. We are also now able to qualify families starting in kindergarten based solely on the income guidelines. I hope that even more people will now consider a Catholic education for their children – it is more affordable than ever!
With May 21st (next Sunday!) being the final day on which religious education classes are taking place, it will be the last Sunday before beginning our summer Sunday Mass schedule. This means that there will be no 2:45 p.m. Mass in Spanish on Sundays from May 28th (Memorial Day weekend) until catechesis resumes in August.
Father Parrish will be on retreat this week. Please pray for him!
Recent read: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by J. R. R. Tolkien. This was the final book I finished in 2022. I might have to start including two recent reads per week! Normally my reading slows down in the summer, though, as I spend more time with family on my Monday day off.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Felicitaciones a los niños que recibieron el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor por primera vez en la Santa Comunión ayer. Por favor oren por estos niños, para que sus corazones estén completamente inflamados con amor por Jesucristo verdaderamente presente en la Eucaristía, y para que sus padres, familiares y amigos puedan ser inspirados por su ejemplo de devoción. ¡Ha sido una alegría celebrar con estos niños y sus familias estas últimas dos semanas!
Este sábado, Caleb Kruse y su compañero de clase, Oscar Duarte, serán ordenados al diaconado en la Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción en Fort Wayne a las 11 a.m. Recordarán que Caleb pasó el verano pasado con nosotros aquí en San Juan. ¡Por favor, recuerden orar por él el sábado! Si puedes ir a Fort Wayne para la Misa de Ordenación, puedo asegurarle que no se arrepentirá. Hay pocas liturgias más conmovedoras y hermosas que una Misa de Ordenación. Si tiene un hijo y piensa que podría estar pensando en la posibilidad de una vocación sacerdotal, ¡sería una excursión familiar especialmente estupenda!
Recientemente solicitamos una subvención para ayudar a cubrir los costos de la renovación de nuestro nuevo edificio de oficinas parroquiales de la Fundación Mary Cross Tippmann, que ayuda a muchas instituciones caritativas en nuestra Diócesis. Estábamos encantados de recibir la cantidad completa que pedimos: $65,000. Esta era nuestra “brecha de financiación” entre el costo total esperado del proyecto y la cantidad que podríamos retirar prudentemente de los ahorros en este momento. La fundación lleva el nombre de Mary Cross Tippmann, la madre de la familia empresarial Tippmann, cuyos negocios de hijo John diezman las ganancias de la fundación y luego las usan para promover la educación católica, las iniciativas pro-vida y el servicio a los pobres. El presupuesto estatal de Indiana que fue aprobado hace dos semanas incluyó una expansión significativa del programa de becas School Choice. Las pautas de ingresos se han ampliado de tal manera que la gran mayoría de las familias ahora califican. Ahora también podemos calificar a las familias que comienzan en el kínder basado únicamente en las pautas de ingresos. Espero que ahora más personas consideren una educación católica para sus hijos – ¡es más asequible que nunca!
Con el 21 de mayo siendo el último día en el que habrá catequesis, también será el último domingo antes de comenzar nuestro horario de misa dominical de verano. Esto significa que no habrá misa de 2:45 p.m. en español los domingos comenzando el 28 de mayo (fin de semana de Memorial Day) hasta agosto cuando la catequesis se reanuda.
El Padre Parrish estará en retiro esta semana. ¡Por favor, oren por él!
