Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, June 25th, 2023

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are excited to welcome today our new parochial vicar, Father Brian Florin! I am excited for you to have the chance to get to know him and very thankful to God and our good bishop for blessing us with another outstanding, young, zealous priest. I hope that you will invite him to your homes and warmly receive him here. We will have a welcome reception for Father Florin on Sunday, July 9th following the 1 p.m. Mass.

This week, many priests from our diocese, including Father Florin, will be on retreat together for the annual diocesan priest retreat. Because of difficulties in finding coverage, we will have Communion services lead by our deacons instead of Mass on Monday evening, Tuesday morning, and Thursday evenings. Confessions will be canceled on the corresponding mornings / evenings as well. This is an extremely rare occurrence here and I thank you for your patience.

Even though we are back in Ordinary Time, we still have many beautiful feast days to celebrate. Last week we celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, yesterday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and this week we will celebrate the Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul. This is an especially dear one to me since they are the patrons of Rome. The following day, June 30th, there is another neat commemoration, of the early martyrs of Rome. Many of them are unknown to us, but we know that in those first years of the Christian faith many anonymous heroes of the faith gave their lives for their faith in Christ. It is these early, anonymous or nearly anonymous martyrs over whose relics the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is celebrated in Roman Catholic churches throughout the world. Before 1970, their relics were frequently the ones placed in consecrated altars and altar stones. It is now common to use a wider variety of saints’ relics.

Traditionally, as the priest approaches the altar to reverence it with a kiss at the beginning of Holy Mass, he prays: “We beseech You, O Lord, by the merits of Your Saints whose relics lie here, and of all the Saints, deign in your mercy to pardon me all my sins.” (“Señor, os suplicamos por los méritos de vuestros Santos cuyas reliquias están aquí y de todos los Santos, que os dignéis perdonarme todos mis pecados. Amén.”)

Recent read: My Brother, the Pope by Georg Ratzinger. Rather providentially, I began reading this last winter shortly before Pope Benedict died. The chapters on the Ratzinger brothers’ childhood are particularly endearing.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

¡Estamos muy contentos de dar la bienvenida hoy al nuevo vicario parroquial, el Padre Brian Florin! Estoy emocionado de que tengan la oportunidad de conocerlo y muy agradecido a Dios y a nuestro buen obispo por bendecirnos con otro sacerdote destacado, joven y fervoroso. Espero que lo inviten a sus hogares y lo reciban de corazón aquí. Tendremos una recepción de bienvenida para el Padre Florín el domingo, 9 de julio después de la misa de las 1 p.m.

Esta semana, muchos sacerdotes de nuestra diócesis, incluyendo al Padre Florin, estarán juntos en retiro para el retiro anual de sacerdotes diocesanos. Debido a las dificultades para encontrar cobertura, tendremos servicios de Comunión dirigidos por nuestros diáconos en lugar de misa el lunes por la noche, el martes por la mañana y el jueves por la noche. También serán canceladas las confesiones por las mañanas / noches correspondientes. Este es un hecho extremadamente raro aquí y les agradezco su paciencia.

A pesar de que estamos de vuelta en el tiempo ordinario, todavía tenemos muchos hermosos días festivos para celebrar. La semana pasada celebramos la Solemnidad del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, ayer celebramos la Solemnidad de la Natividad de San Juan el Bautista, y esta semana celebraremos la Solemnidad de las SS. Pedro y Pablo. Esto es especialmente querido para mí, ya que son los patrones de Roma. Al día siguiente, 30 de junio, hay otra conmemoración, la de los primeros mártires de Roma. Muchos de ellos son desconocidos para nosotros, pero sabemos que en aquellos primeros años de la fe cristiana muchos héroes anónimos de la fe dieron sus vidas por su fe en Cristo. Son estos los primeros mártires anónimos o casi anónimos sobre cuyas reliquias se celebra el Santo Sacrificio de la Misa en las iglesias católicas romanas de todo el mundo. Antes de 1970, sus reliquias eran frecuentemente colocadas en altares consagrados y piedras de altar. Ahora es común usar una variedad más amplia de reliquias de santos.

Tradicionalmente, cuando el sacerdote se acerca al altar para reverenciarlo con un beso al comienzo de la Santa Misa, reza: “Señor, os suplicamos por los méritos de vuestros Santos cuyas reliquias están aquí y de todos los Santos, que os dignéis perdonarme todos mis pecados. Amén.”
