Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, July 23rd
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today we welcome Fr. Eric Schimmel, C.S.C. to give our annual mission appeal on behalf of Holy Cross Mission Center. The Congregation of the Holy Cross plays a very important role in our Diocese, running the University of Notre Dame and serving in several parishes in South Bend and other areas of our diocese. Many people do not know, though, that missionary work is also a central part of their vocation. It is good for us to be reminded of the experience of the Church outside of our homes and in places where the Gospel is being preached for the first time or the charity of Christ is being brought to those in great need. Thank you for your generous support of the Holy Cross missions.
Father Florin will be leaving on Thursday for World Youth Day in Portugal, along with several young people from our parish and youth and young adults from around the Diocese (and, of course, the world!). Please pray for their safe return and that it will be a spiritually fruitful experience. Many priestly and religious vocations, as well as deeper discipleship on the part of the young, have been the fruits of many past World Youth Days.
On Tuesday I am excited to attend the episcopal consecration (ordination as bishop) of my seminary spiritual director, Msgr. Edward Lohse, as Bishop of Kalamazoo. I was thrilled to hear of his appointment as bishop and delighted when I received an invitation to attend (despite only limited correspondence with him these past seven years). Please pray for Bishop-elect Lohse!
Recent read: The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkein. Though I have been a fan of The Lord of the Rings and read it several times since childhood, I had never been interested in the larger Tolkien “legendarium” until recently. I feel like I’ve only just discovered what an incredible author Tolkien really is.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Hoy damos la bienvenida al P. Eric Schimmel, C.S.C. para dar nuestra petición anual de mision en nombre del Centro Misionero de la Santa Cruz. La Congregación de la Santa Cruz juega un papel muy importante en nuestra diócesis, dirigiendo la Universidad de Notre Dame y sirviendo en varias parroquias en South Bend y otras áreas de nuestra diócesis. Sin embargo, muchas personas no saben que el trabajo misionero es también una parte central de su vocación. Es bueno para nosotros recordar la experiencia de la Iglesia fuera de nuestros hogares y en lugares donde el Evangelio está siendo predicado por primera vez o la caridad de Cristo está siendo llevada a los más necesitados. Gracias por su generoso apoyo a las misiones de la Santa Cruz.
El Padre Florin partirá el jueves para la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud en Portugal, junto con varios jóvenes de nuestra parroquia y jóvenes y adultos jóvenes de toda la Diócesis (¡y, por supuesto, del mundo!). Por favor oren por su regreso seguro y que sea una experiencia espiritualmente fructífera. Muchas vocaciones sacerdotales y religiosas, así como un discipulado más profundo por parte de los jóvenes, han sido los frutos de muchas Jornadas Mundiales de la Juventud pasadas.
Estoy emocionado de asistir el martes a la consagración episcopal (ordenación como obispo) de mi director espiritual del seminario, Monseñor Edward Lohse, como obispo de Kalamazoo. Me emocionó enterarme de su nombramiento como obispo y me alegré cuando recibí una invitación para asistir (a pesar de la correspondencia limitada con él en los últimos siete años). ¡Por favor, oren por el obispo electo Lohse!
