Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, July 18
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Fr. Logan will be out of town Monday – Friday spending some time with his family. (I wrote last week that he would be gone for a few days but that turned out not to be the case!) I am very grateful that Fr. Andrew Hochstedler, OFM Conv. will be visiting as well and helping me with weekday Masses. Fr. Andrew is a convert to Catholicism and his family lives here in Goshen. He has helped here at St. John’s a few times the past four years and many parishioners have benefited his inspiring homilies and insightful direction in confession. Welcome Father Andrew! He will celebrate the morning weekday Masses this week and will help a little next week too.
On Wednesday I will serve as the MC for the funeral of Father Camilio Tirabassi. I first met Fr. Cam as a seminarian and was impressed by how he continued serving in parishes and at St. Joseph High School even after he retired. His joyfulness and kindness brought Christ’s light into many lives. Please pray for the repose of his priestly soul.
Friday is the big day to kick off the Elkhart County Fair and our parish’s biggest fundraiser of the year with our parking initiative! It’s not too late to volunteer, so please call the parish office right away if you haven’t signed up for a slot yet. Many new friendships emerged from this great communal effort when we participated two years ago. This is a great opportunity to form a deeper connection with our parish and also to serve the broader community together. Let’s show everyone who St. John’s can come together to do something great!
Another item on my agenda this week is a board meeting for the Center for Healing and Hope. This charitable health clinic began as an apostolate of our parish and earlier this year moved into its own building for the first time. It is located on Lincoln Avenue and is a real medical office building (no more church basement!). If you know of someone in need of health care who might not have insurance, CHH is here to help.
Recent read: Journal of a Soul by St. John XXIII. This is the spiritual autobiography – composed mostly of his journal entries – of the saintly pope from the mid-20th century. St. John XXIII (recently canonized) is mostly known for calling the Second Vatican Council and overseeing its first session. One of the most inspiring parts of this autobiography is seeing how, from a very young age, he was striving for the heights of holiness.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
El P. Logan estará fuera de la ciudad de lunes a viernes pasando tiempo con su familia. (La semana pasada escribí que se iría por unos días, pero resultó no ser el caso!) Estoy muy agradecido de que el P. Andrew Hochstedler, OFM Conv. que me estará visitando y me estará ayudando con las Misas de entre semana. El P. Andrew se convirtió al catolicismo y su familia vive aquí en Goshen. Él ha ayudado un par de veces en los últimos cuatro años y muchos feligreses se han beneficiado de sus inspiradoras homilías y su dirección perspicaz en la confesión. ¡Bienvenido Padre Andrew! Él celebrará las Misas de la mañana esta semana y también ayudará un poco la semana que viene.
El miércoles serviré como maestro de ceremonia (mc) para el funeral del Padre Camilio Tirabassi. Conocí al P. Cam cuando era seminarista y me impresionó cómo continuó sirviendo en las parroquias y en la Escuela de San José, incluso después de haberse jubilado. Su alegría y bondad trajeron la luz de Cristo a muchas vidas. Por favor oren por el reposo de su alma sacerdotal.
¡El viernes es el gran día para dar inicio a la Feria del Condado de Elkhart y la recaudación de fondos más grande del año de nuestra parroquia con nuestra iniciativa de estacionamiento! No es demasiado tarde para ser voluntario, así que por favor llame a la oficina parroquial de inmediato si aún no se ha inscrito para un turno. Muchas nuevas amistades surgieron de este gran esfuerzo comunitario cuando participamos hace dos años. Esta es una gran oportunidad para formar una conexión más profunda con nuestra parroquia y también para servir juntos a la comunidad en general. ¡Mostremos a todos que San Juan puede unirse para hacer algo grande!
Otro punto en mi agenda de esta semana es una reunión con la mesa directiva de Center for Healing and Hope. Esta clínica de salud caritativa comenzó como un apostolado de nuestra parroquia y a principios de este año se mudó a su propio edificio por primera vez. Se encuentra en Lincoln Avenue y es un verdadero edificio de oficinas médicas (¡no más sótanos de iglesias!). Si usted sabe de alguien que necesita atención médica que podría no tener seguro, CHH está aquí para ayudarlo.
