Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, January 30th
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today we kick off Catholic Schools Week! This week we celebrate Catholic education. It is a great blessing for our parish to support a Catholic school – one which this year now offers preschool through sixth grade! We are opening registration for our school early this year. If your children are not currently attending St. John’s school, this is the opportunity to consider whether Catholic education might be the right fit for your family. At our parish school, the children benefit from a loving, nurturing environment that not only respects but upholds and promotes our Catholic faith. St. John’s is also enriched by the different cultures of our parish and these cultures are uniquely supported and encouraged in our school – even in our leadership. We hope to see you at our open house, this Wednesday, February 2nd at 5:00 p.m.!
The automatic door openers on the north entrance to the church are now functioning! We are excited to offer this important accommodation to everyone who needs the assistance.
We unveiled another improvement to our campus recently as well: our new sign! It looks a lot like the old sign but with a couple changes. The sign needed to be changed because of our (not so) new Mass schedule, and we decided that since the Mass schedule is readily available on our website, it was more important to use the space on the sign to make it bilingual. This sends a message of welcome and belonging to more of our parishioners when you see your own language reflected in the official advertising of the parish. Just as being multilingual is a great gift for any person to have, being a multilingual parish brings beauty and richness to the life of our parish. And that is something we should brag about to everyone driving down Main Street!
Recent read: The Comedians by Graham Greene. Finally having finished Greene’s five “major novels,” I’ve moved on to some of his “minor” works as well. This book shows Greene’s interest in the politics of the developing world, set amidst the turbulence of revolution in Haiti, though continuing his exploration of the themes of faith, doubt, and infidelity found in the “major” novels. That this book would be considered any author’s “minor” work shows the strength of Greene as an author, especially through his continuing to explore related themes without merely telling the same story in a different setting.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
¡Hoy damos inicio a la Semana de las Escuelas Católicas! Esta semana celebramos la educación católica. Es una gran bendición para nuestra parroquia apoyar a una escuela católica, ¡una que ofrece este año preescolar hasta sexto grado! Estamos abriendo las inscripciones para la escuela antes este año. Si sus hijos actualmente no asisten a la escuela de San Juan, esta es la oportunidad de considerar si la educación católica podría ser la adecuada para su familia. En nuestra escuela parroquial, los niños se benefician de un ambiente amoroso y nutritivo que no sólo respeta sino que defiende y promueve nuestra fe católica. San Juan también se enriquece con las diferentes culturas de la parroquia y estas culturas son apoyadas y alentadas en nuestra escuela, incluso en nuestro liderazgo. ¡Esperamos verlos este miércoles 2 de febrero a las 5:00 p.m.!
¡Las puertas automáticas en la entrada norte de la iglesia están ahora funcionando! Estamos emocionados de ofrecer esta adaptación importante a todos los que necesitan la ayuda.
Recientemente también revelamos otra mejoría: ¡el nuevo letrero! Se parece mucho al viejo pero con un par de cambios. El letrero necesitaba ser cambiado debido a nuestro (no tan) nuevo horario de Misa, y decidimos que como el horario de Misa está disponible en nuestro sitio web, era más importante usar el espacio en el letrero para hacerlo bilingüe. Esto envía un mensaje de pertenecer y de bienvenido a muchos de nuestros feligreses cuando ven tu propio idioma reflejado en la publicidad oficial de la parroquia. Así como ser multilingüe es un gran don para cualquier persona, ser una parroquia multilingüe aporta belleza y riqueza a la vida de la parroquia. ¡Y eso es algo de lo que debemos presumir a todos conduciendo por la calle main!
