Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, January 29
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This week is national Catholic Schools Week. We heard before Mass today from parents who have deeply appreciated the opportunity for a Catholic education here in our parish. Our Catholic schools are more important than ever, and are one of the best tools we have for cultivating a life of faith in our young people. Today, we are extremely grateful to everyone who has supported our parish school over its more than 100 years of making young disciples as an important apostolate of our parish.
It is more affordable than ever to provide a Catholic education for your child! Most households now qualify for a full scholarship thanks to the school choice program in the State of Indiana. If you have thought in the past that it would not be possible for your family, please give us the opportunity to show you all the possibilities.
We appreciate everyone’s help in spreading the good news about our parish school. Encourage your children, grandchildren, neighbors, and friends to check out St. John the Evangelist Catholic School! You can invite them to our open house this Wednesday.
This Tuesday, January 31st, will be one month since the death of Pope Benedict XVI. It is traditional to mark this occasion with a “Month’s Mind” Mass. Both of our Masses this Tuesday will be offered for the repose of his soul. If you are not able to make it to Mass, maybe you could offer a rosary or other prayers for him.
On Thursday, we celebrate the final end to the Christmas season with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This feast is known as “Candlemas” because of the traditional blessing of candles that takes place at the beginning of Mass. You are welcome to bring candles to Mass on Thursday to participate in this annual tradition.
Recent read: The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh. This is a hilarious parody of mid-20th Century California through the lens of a fictional pet mortuary. Perhaps the funniest of Waugh’s many satirical works.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Esta semana es la Semana Nacional de las Escuelas Católicas. Hoy escuchamos antes de la misa a los padres que han apreciado profundamente la oportunidad de una educación católica aquí en nuestra parroquia. Nuestras escuelas católicas son más importantes que nunca, y son una de las mejores herramientas que tenemos para cultivar una vida de fe en nuestros jóvenes. Hoy, estamos extremadamente agradecidos a todos los que han apoyado a nuestra escuela parroquial durante sus más de 100 años de hacer discípulos jóvenes como un apostolado importante de nuestra parroquia.
¡Es más accesible que nunca dar una educación católica para su hijo! La mayoría de los hogares ahora califican para una beca completa gracias al programa de Elección de Escuela en Indiana (School Choice Program in the State of Indiana.) Este martes, 31 de enero, será un mes desde la muerte del Papa Benedicto XVI. Es tradicional marcar esta ocasión con una Misa del mes. Ambas misas de este martes serán ofrecidas para el reposo de su alma. Si usted no puede llegar a la Misa, tal vez podría ofrecer un rosario u otras oraciones por él.
El jueves, celebramos el final de la temporada navideña con la Fiesta de la Presentación del Señor. Esta fiesta se conoce como "Candelaria" por la tradición de bendecir las velas antes de la Misa. Usted es bienvenido a traer velas a la Misa el jueves para participar en esta tradición anual.
