Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, December 3rd, 2023

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We begin today the holy season of Advent. This is a time of quiet preparation for the Lord’s coming, a season of joyful anticipation. This year, we have the shortest Advent possible with Christmas falling on a Monday, meaning that the fourth week of Advent will only last one day. That means that the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve will coincide this year. The last time that this happened was my first year at St. John’s: 2017.

In case you are wondering what that Sunday will look like here, we will have most of our normal Sunday schedule, with a brief pause for us to catch our breaths, and then we will begin the Christmas schedule that afternoon. Christmas is a Holy Day of Obligation. It is important to recognize that the obligation is for Christmas itself. Going to Mass on the evening of Christmas Eve is a way to fulfill that obligation, but the obligation is for Christmas and not for Christmas Eve. Each Catholic will have two obligations to fulfill: The Fourth Sunday of Advent, and Christmas. All of the Masses on Saturday evening, the 23rd, as well as any Mass on the 24th (including the Christmas Eve Masses at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.) can count for the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Any Masses on the evening of Christmas Eve (starting at 4 p.m.) or on Christmas Day can count for Christmas. So you could go at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve for the 4th Sunday of Advent and then again at midnight on the 25th for Christmas. Or you could go on the morning of Sunday the 24th for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and then on the morning of the 25th for Christmas. Or the morning of Sunday the 24th for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and the evening of Sunday the 24th for Christmas. Or any other combination! Just make sure that you are attending one Mass for each obligation.

Combinations that would not count would be:

· Evening of Saturday the 23rd + Morning of Sunday the 24th (both of these Masses can only count for the Fourth Sunday of Advent)

· Midnight, December 25th + Morning, December 25th (both of these Masses can only count for Christmas)

On Sunday the 24th, we will not have the 2:45 p.m. Mass in Spanish in order to prepare for Christmas Eve Masses, which will be at 4 p.m. in English and 6:30 p.m. in Spanish. (Due to poor attendance, we have eliminated the later Spanish Christmas Eve Mass.) At the Spanish Christmas Eve Mass, there will be overflow seating with a live video and audio in the church basement. Christmas day Masses will be like normal: 12 a.m. (English), 9:30 a.m. (English), 12 p.m. (Spanish).

The priests of the Diocese have our Advent day of recollection on Tuesday. Please pray for us, that we might be open to the graces that the Lord wants to share with us to prepare us for the holy season of Advent.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Comenzamos hoy el tiempo santo de Adviento. Este es un tiempo de preparación tranquila para la venida del Señor, una temporada de anticipación gozosa. Este año, tenemos el Adviento más corto con la Navidad cayendo en un lunes, lo que significa que la cuarta semana de Adviento solo durará un día. Eso significa que el Cuarto Domingo de Adviento y Nochebuena coincidirán este año. La última vez que esto sucedió fue mi primer año en San Juan en el 2017.

En caso de que te estés preguntando cómo será ese domingo aquí, tendremos la mayor parte de nuestro horario normal de domingo, con una breve pausa para que podamos respirar, y luego comenzaremos el horario de Navidad esa tarde. La Navidad es un Día Santo de Obligación. Es importante reconocer que la obligación es para la Navidad misma. Ir a misa en la noche de Nochebuena es una manera de cumplir con esa obligación, pero la obligación es para Navidad y no para Nochebuena. Cada católico tendrá dos obligaciones que cumplir: El Cuarto Domingo de Adviento y la Navidad. Todas las misas del sábado por la noche, el día 23, así como cualquier misa del día 24 (incluyendo las misas de Nochebuena a las 4 p.m. y 6:30 p.m.) pueden contar para el cuarto domingo de Adviento. Cualquier misa en la noche de Nochebuena(a partir de las 4 p.m.) o el día de Navidad puede contar para la Navidad. Así que podrías ir a las 4 p.m. en Nochebuena para el Cuarto Domingo de Adviento y luego nuevamente a la medianoche del 25 para Navidad. O puedes ir en la mañana del domingo 24 para el Cuarto Domingo de Adviento y luego en la mañana del día 25 para Navidad. O la mañana del domingo 24 para el Cuarto Domingo de Adviento y la tarde del domingo 24 para Navidad. ¡O cualquier otra combinación! Solo asegúrate de asistir a una misa por cada obligación.

Las combinaciones que no contarían serían:

· Noche del sábado 23 y el domingo 24 por la mañana (ambas misas solo pueden contar para el Cuarto Domingo de Adviento)

· Medianoche, 25 de diciembre y 25 de diciembre por la mañana (ambas misas solo pueden contar para Navidad)

El domingo 24, no tendremos la Misa en español a las 2:45 p.m. para prepararnos para las Misas de Nochebuena, que serán a las 4 p.m. en inglés y a las 6:30 p.m. en español. (Debido a la escasa asistencia, hemos eliminado la misa de Nochebuena en español). En la Misa de Nochebuena en español, habrá asientos adicionales en el sótano de la iglesia con un video y audio en vivo. Las misas del día de Navidad serán normales: 12 a.m. (inglés), 9:30 a.m. (inglés), 12 p.m. (español).
