Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, December 24

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Welcome to the busiest possible day in the life of our parish: Christmas Eve on a Sunday. Having participated in the Mass of the Fourth Sunday of Advent, we look forward to welcoming you back tomorrow or just in a few hours for one of our Christmas Masses.

After having announced last week our new Associate Director of Sacred Music for our Masses in Spanish, Christian Cortés, I am excited to share today that we have a new Interim Director of Sacred Music who will be with us from January to May, Erin Taylor. Erin is from the Washington, DC area and will be in the final semester of the Master in Sacred Music program at the University of Notre Dame. Previous to her graduate studies, she was Director of Music and Liturgy for five years at a large, bilingual parish in northern Virginia. Our search committee continues its work to find the right person to fill this position on a permanent basis, but we are thrilled to have Erin as interim director for the next few months, giving us the chance to get to know each other better, and continuing our overall search process on a more industry-standard timeline.

Following Christmas tomorrow, there are so many other beautiful celebrations throughout this next week. On Tuesday, we celebrate the first martyr, St. Stephen. Wednesday is our parish’s patronal feast, St. John the Evangelist, which we will observe as a solemnity since our parish is under his patronage. I particularly encourage you to participate in Mass on Wednesday if you are able in order to honor our heavenly patron! Then on Thursday we commemorate the Holy Innocents, who confessed Christ by their death in the cruel slaughter of Herod. The Octave of Christmas – eight days of celebration – continues until December 31.

January 1st, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, is usually a Holy Day of Obligation. This year, though, since it falls on a Monday, it is not obligatory to attend Mass on this day. For this reason, we will not have any anticipated Masses on the evening of January 31st, since that day is a Sunday and we will have already had five Masses here earlier in the day (although those Masses will be for the Feast of the Holy Family). Regardless, it would be great to start your new year by attending Mass on the first day of the new year. We will have Masses at 9:30 a.m. in English and 12:00 p.m. in Spanish. For January 30-31, we will be on our regular Sunday schedule.

Recent read: The Spirit of the Liturgy by Romano Guardini. This is a classic work of the 20th Century liturgical movement. Joseph Ratzinger, inspired by Guardini’s work, gave his own influential work on the theology of the liturgy the same title in homage to Guardini.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Bienvenido al día más ocupado en la vida de nuestra parroquia: La víspera de Navidad en un domingo. Habiendo participado en la Misa del Cuarto Domingo de Adviento, esperamos darle la bienvenida mañana o solo en unas pocas horas para una de nuestras Misas de Navidad.

Después de haber anunciado la semana pasada a nuestro nuevo Director Asociado de Música Sagrada para nuestras misas en español, Christian Cortés, estoy emocionado de compartir hoy que tenemos un nuevo Director Interino de Música Sagrada que estará con nosotros de enero a mayo, Erin Taylor. Erin es del área de Washington, DC y estará en el último semestre del programa de Maestría en Música Sagrada en la Universidad de Notre Dame. Antes de sus estudios de posgrado, fue Directora de Música y Liturgia durante cinco años en una parroquia grande y bilingüe en el norte de Virginia. Nuestro comité de búsqueda continúa su trabajo para encontrar a la persona adecuada para ocupar este puesto de forma permanente, pero estamos encantados de tener a Erin como director interino durante los próximos meses, dándonos la oportunidad de conocernos mejor, y continuar nuestro proceso de búsqueda general en un cronograma más estándar de la industria.

Mañana después de la Navidad, hay otras hermosas celebraciones a lo largo de esta próxima semana. El martes, celebramos al primer mártir, San Esteban. El miércoles es la fiesta patronal de nuestra parroquia, San Juan el Evangelista, que observaremos como solemnidad ya que nuestra parroquia está bajo su patrocinio. ¡Te animo particularmente a que participes en la Misa del miércoles si puedes, para honrar a nuestro patrón celestial! Luego el jueves conmemoramos a los Santos Inocentes, que confesaron a Cristo por su muerte en la cruel matanza de Herodes. La Octava de Navidad – ocho días de celebración – continúa hasta el 31 de diciembre.

El 1 de enero, la solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios, suele ser un día santo de obligación. Este año, sin embargo, ya que cae en un lunes, no es obligatorio asistir a la misa en este día. Por esta razón, no tendremos ninguna misa anticipada en la tarde del 31 de enero, ya que ese día es un domingo y ya habremos tenido cinco misas aquí temprano en el día (aunque esas misas serán para la Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia). De todos modos, sería genial comenzar su nuevo año asistiendo a la misa en el primer día del nuevo año. Tendremos misas a las 9:30 a.m. en inglés y a las 12:00 p.m. en español. Para el 30 al 31 de enero, estaremos en nuestro horario regular de domingo.
