Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, August 8th
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We are excited to have our parish school back in session this week! The children bring such joy to our lives, and it is a joy to know that we are providing them with such an excellent, faith-based education. Best wishes to all who are going back to school this week!
Our religious education classes will begin in just one week on Sunday, August 15. I am excited to have our Sundays jam-packed-full of activity once again! Without having to celebrate overflow Masses in the gym this year, we are resuming our parent formation program and the priests can be involved in religious education once again. Honestly, it’s more work for us this way, since saying one more Mass takes time but not much more preparation, but it is a true labor of love. To be with our young people in formation for the sacraments of initiation and their parents is a source of joy and fulfillment for us. With the beginning of religious education, we will resume the 3 p.m. Mass in Spanish each Sunday until Memorial Day weekend, 2022, starting next Sunday.
On a personal note, many of you know that I was excitedly awaiting the birth of my first niece, who was born on Tuesday, July 27 – Lucy Catherine Gregerson. Thank you for your prayers for my sister-in-law Casey during her pregnancy. Mom and baby are doing very well. We are excited for her baptism here at St. John’s in a couple weeks! I was thrilled that my brother and sister-in-law were planning for her baptism before she was born. The Church urgently desires that all children born to Catholic parents be baptized in the first weeks of their lives. The gift of life given to children by their parents is an immensely precious gift, but the gift of eternal life given to us by God in Baptism through the ministry of the Church is greater yet.
Recent read: Brighton Rock by Graham Greene. This is one of Green’s three “Catholic novels,” and the third of which I’ve read. Greene’s exploration of faith and doubt takes place within the context of a detective / murder mystery. The Catholic themes are less visible than in The Power and the Glory and The Heart of the Matter, Greene’s other two “Catholic novels,” but they are still no less potent.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
¡Estamos emocionados de tener nuestra escuela parroquial de vuelta en sesión esta semana! Los niños traen tal alegría a nuestras vidas, y es una alegría saber que les estamos proporcionando una educación tan excelente, basada en la fe. ¡Los mejores deseos a todos los que van a volver a la escuela esta semana!
Nuestras clases de educación religiosa comenzarán en dos semanas el domingo 15 de agosto. ¡Estoy emocionado de tener nuestros domingos repletos de actividad una vez más! Sin tener que celebrar misas desbordadas en el gimnasio este año, estamos reanudando nuestro programa de formación de padres y los sacerdotes pueden participar en la educación religiosa una vez más. Honestamente, es más trabajo para nosotros de esta manera, ya que decir una misa más lleva tiempo pero no más preparación, pero es un verdadero trabajo de amor. Estar con nuestros jóvenes en formación para los sacramentos de iniciación y sus padres es una fuente de alegría y satisfacción para nosotros. Con el comienzo de la educación religiosa, retomaremos la misa en español de las 3 p.m. cada domingo hasta el fin de semana de Memorial Day, 2022.
En una nota personal, muchos de ustedes saben que yo estaba esperando emocionado el nacimiento de mi primera sobrina, que nació el martes 27 de julio – Lucy Catherine Gregerson. Gracias por sus oraciones por mi cuñada Casey durante su embarazo. La mamá y bebé están haciendo muy bien. ¡Estamos emocionados por su bautismo aquí en San Juan en un par de semanas! Me entusiasmó que mi hermano y mi cuñada estuvieran planeando su bautismo antes de que ella naciera. La Iglesia desea urgentemente que todos los niños nacidos de padres católicos sean bautizados en las primeras semanas de sus vidas. El don de la vida dado a los niños por sus padres es un regalo inmensamente precioso, pero el don de la vida eterna que Dios nos dio en el Bautismo a través del ministerio de la Iglesia es aún mayor.
