Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, August 6th
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We are excited to welcome Father Lawrence Abanobi today. Father Lawrence is a priest of the Archdiocese of Abuja, Nigeria who is a doctoral student at the Pontifical University Urbanianum in Rome. He is a friend of a friend of mine and was looking for a quiet place to spend the months of August and September while working on his dissertation. He is looking forward to assisting us with Masses and Confessions in his free time, as well as getting to know the good people of our parish.
Father Florin and other pilgrims from our diocese will return from World Youth Day in Portugal this week. I look forward to hearing about their experience! World Youth Day has been a life changing experience for many young people.
Speaking of pilgrimages, we have the annual bicycle pilgrimage to the Diocesan Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe this Saturday. This is a big event every year with 300+ people from our parish regularly participating, along with other groups from around the diocese. This year, Bishop Rhoades will celebrate Holy Mass for the pilgrims and I will be the MC for the Mass.
Registrations for Religious Education / Catechesis are trickling in. If you have children of catechetical age, please do us and yourself a favor by registering early and not waiting until the last minute.
On Thursday we celebrate the feast of St. Lawrence. He was one of the deacons of Rome and was martyred when he refused to turn over the goods of the Church to the Roman authorities. Lawrence had a great love of the poor and when asked to bring the riches of the Church to the governor, he brought the poor of the city with him as authentic riches. St. Lawrence has always been much beloved in Rome, with more churches in the city dedicated to him than any other saint beside the Blessed Virgin – even more than St. Peter himself. Let us pray that his example might inspire our deacons, priests, bishops, and all who serve in the Church to a greater love of the poor.
Recent read: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. I have wanted to read this for a long time and was finally motivated to do so by tackling it together with a friend. I have been doing several reading projects together with out of town friends lately and it has been a fun way to stay connected with them.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Hoy estamos muy contentos de dar la bienvenida al Padre Lawrence Abanobi. El Padre Lawrence es sacerdote de la Arquidiócesis de Abuja, Nigeria, estudiante de doctorado en la Pontificia Universidad Urbaniana de Roma. Él es amigo de un amigo mío y estaba buscando un lugar tranquilo para pasar los meses de agosto y septiembre mientras trabajaba en su tesis. Él está deseando ayudar en su tiempo libre con las Misas y confesiones, así como conocer a las buenas personas de nuestra parroquia.
El Padre Florin y otros peregrinos de nuestra diócesis regresarán esta semana de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud en Portugal. ¡Espero escuchar acerca de su experiencia! La Jornada Mundial de la Juventud ha sido una experiencia que ha cambiado la vida de muchos jóvenes.
Hablando de peregrinaciones, este sábado tenemos la peregrinación anual en bicicleta al Santuario Diocesano de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Este es un gran evento con más de 300 personas participando cada año regularmente de nuestra parroquia, junto con otros grupos de toda la diócesis. Este año, el Monseñor Rhoades celebrará la Santa Misa para los peregrinos y yo seré el MC para la Misa.
Las inscripciones para la Educación Religiosa / Catequesis están llegando gradualmente. Si tiene hijos de edad catequética, por favor háganos un favor a nosotros y a usted mismo inscribiéndose con tiempo y no esperando hasta el último minuto.
El jueves celebramos la fiesta de San Lorenzo. Fue uno de los diáconos de Roma y fue martirizado cuando se negó a entregar los bienes de la Iglesia a las autoridades romanas. Lorenzo tenía un gran amor por los pobres y cuando se le pidió que trajera las riquezas de la Iglesia al gobernador, trajo a los pobres de la ciudad con él como auténticas riquezas. San Lorenzo siempre ha sido muy querido en Roma, aparte de la Santísima Virgen más iglesias en la ciudad son dedicadas a él que cualquier otro santo, incluso más que el propio San Pedro. Oremos para que su ejemplo inspire a nuestros diáconos, sacerdotes, obispos y todos los que sirven en la Iglesia a un mayor amor a los pobres.
