Pastor's Weekly Update: October 25, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This will be a busy week preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings we will have rehearsals and the chance for the confirmandi and the sponsors to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance. Thursday evening, Friday evening, and Saturday morning will be our three Confirmation Masses. We are so grateful to Bishop Rhoades for his generosity in coming three times! We are grateful as well to our Coordinators of Religious Education: Deacon Giovani and Mrs. Virginia Muñoz and their dedicated teams of catechists who have prepared these young people. This year, Catholic adults from our parish who have not yet received the sacrament will also take part. (Normally they go to a special Mass with the Bishop with other adults from around the Diocese.) Please pray that our confirmandi’s hearts will be open to the grace of the Holy Spirit and that the Sacrament of Confirmation will make them bold witnesses of Christ to our world.

Next Sunday is all Saints Day. It is also the day upon which Bishop Rhoades’s general dispensation from the Sunday obligation expires. I expect that we will hear more this week from him about this. (Update: The dispensation has been extended indefinitely.)

There will be some slight changes to daily Masses this week: Our school children will now be participating in the 8 a.m. Masses on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday and Friday morning Masses will be more low-key. We continue having Mass in English on Wednesday evenings and in Spanish on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, all at 6 p.m. All these Masses are open to anyone would like to participate. (Note modified schedule this week due to Confirmations.)

We continue to make good progress towards our goal for the Annual Bishop’s Appeal. With every individual or family’s commitment, we will make and exceed our goal! Any money pledged over our goal of $80,000 will offset the losses we have incurred due to higher operating costs and lower collections over the past few months. 100% participation is the most important key to success!

Recent read: Shepherding the People of God: The spirituality of diocesan priests in St. John of Avila by Gustavo Castillo. A thoughtful gift from a parishioner, this book brings into the English-speaking world the thought of a new doctor of the Church, St. John of Avila, who worked to reform the clergy during the counter-reformation of the 17th century.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Esta será una semana muy ajetreada haciendo la preparación para el Sacramento de la Confirmación. El lunes, martes y miércoles por la noche tendremos ensayos y la oportunidad para que los estudiantes de confirmación y sus padrinos celebren el Sacramento de la Penitencia. El jueves por la noche, el viernes por la noche y el sábado por la mañana serán nuestras tres Misas de confirmación. ¡Estamos muy agradecidos con el Obispo Rhoades por su generosidad al venir tres veces! También estamos a g r a d e c i d o s c o n n u e s t r o s coordinadores de educación religiosa: el Diácono Giovani y la Sra. Virginia Muñoz y con sus equipos de catequistas que han preparado a estos j ó v e n e s . E s t e a ñ o , t a m b i é n participarán los católicos adultos de nuestra parroquia que aún no han recibido el sacramento. (Normalmente van a una Misa especial con el Obispo y con otros adultos de la Diócesis.) Por favor, oren para que los corazones de nuestros estudiantes de confirmación estén abiertos a la gracia del Espíritu Santo y que el Sacramento de la confirmación los haga testigos audaces de Cristo a nuestro mundo.

El día de Todos los Santos es el próximo domingo. Es también el día en el que se expira la dispensación general de Mons. Rhoades de la obligación dominical. Espero que esta semana escuchemos más sobre esto. (Actualización: El Sr. Obispo extendió la dispensa hasta nuevo aviso.)

Habrá algunos pequeños cambios en las Misas diarias esta semana: Los niños de escuela ahora participarán en las Misas de las 8 a.m. el lunes, martes y miércoles. Las Misas de la mañana del jueves y el viernes serán más discretas. Continuamos teniendo Misa en inglés los miércoles por la noche y en español los lunes, martes, jueves y viernes por la noche, todas a las 6 p.m. todas estas Misas están abiertas a cualquiera que quiera participar. (Nota: programación modificada esta semana debido a confirmaciones.)

Seguimos avanzando bien hacia nuestro objetivo para la Apelación Anual del Obispo. ¡Con el compromiso de cada individuo o familia, haremos y superaremos nuestro objetivo! Cualquier dinero sobre nuestra meta de $80,000 compensará las pérdidas en las que hemos incurrido debido a mayores costos de operación y menores cobros en los últimos meses. ¡La participación del 100% es la clave más importante para el éxito!
