Pastor's Weekly Update: March 7, 2021
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Our Lenten series continues this week as we explore the fatherhood of St. Joseph and lessons for earthly fatherhood. Week 4: St. Joseph and the sanctification of work. Week 5: St. Joseph, terror of demons. We look forward to seeing you this Tuesday for our third session! The Spanish track starts at 6 p.m. with Mass in the church and the English track starts at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. It has been great to have a parish-wide event once again!
We are making plans for Holy Week at the end of this month. I’m so glad not to have to repeat last year’s bizarre celebrations, especially the heavily modified Easter Vigil. I’m very much looking forward to the Chrism Mass, for which we were not able to gather last year. At this Mass, the Bishop consecrates the holy oils used for the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders, and the Anointing of the Sick, and the priests renew their priestly promises. Due to the need for physical distancing, the Chrism Mass will be limited to clergy. We anticipate receiving revised instructions for Holy Week this year as to what modifications will be necessary in the liturgies, but I do not expect them to be substantial departures from what we are used to. The biggest challenge at St. John’s will be dealing with the number of people who normally come – a great problem to have. We will be more grateful than ever to our wonderful new media team, doubtlessly.
Next Friday, March 19th, is the Solemnity of St. Joseph. This feast is particularly significant this year during the Year of St. Joseph. We will begin a Novena to St. Joseph this Wednesday, which will be recited after all Masses until March 19th. Following March 19th, we will recite the Litany of St. Joseph after Mass on Wednesdays, the day traditional dedicated to him (like Saturday is to Mary, Fridays to the Sacred Heart, Thursdays for the Blessed Sacrament).
Recent read: The Four Quartets by T. S. Eliot. This is my favorite work of poetry, and I always make sure to revisit it at least once a year.

Queridos hermanos en Cristo,
Nuestra serie cuaresmal continúa esta semana mientras exploramos la paternidad de San José y las lecciones para la paternidad terrenal. Semana 4 San José y la santificación del trabajo. Semana 5 San José, terror de demonios. ¡Esperamos verlos este martes para la primera sesión! El curso en español comienza a las 6 p.m. con la Misa en la iglesia y el curso en inglés comienza a las 6:30 p.m. en el gimnasio. ¡Ha sido genial tener un evento parroquial una vez más!
Estamos haciendo planes para la Semana Santa a finales de este mes. Estoy muy contento de no tener que repetir las extrañas celebraciones del año pasado, especialmente la Vigilia Pascual muy modificada. Tengo muchas ganas de la Misa de Crisma, para la que no pudimos reunirnos el año pasado. En esta Misa, el Obispo consagra los santos óleos utilizados para los sacramentos del bautismo, la confirmación, las órdenes sagradas y la unción de los enfermos, y los sacerdotes renuevan sus promesas sacerdotales. Debido a la necesidad de distanciamiento físico, la Misa Crismal estará limitada al clero. Anticipamos recibir instrucciones modificadas para la Semana Santa este año en cuanto a qué modificaciones serán necesarias en las liturgias, pero no espero que sean desviaciones sustanciales de lo que estamos acostumbrados. El mayor desafío aquí será lidiar con el número de personas que normalmente vienen – un gran problema para tener. Sin duda, estaremos más agradecidos que nunca con nuestro maravilloso nuevo equipo de medios sociales.
El próximo viernes, 19 de marzo, es la Solemnidad de San José. Esta fiesta es particularmente significativa este año durante el Año de San José. Este miércoles comenzaremos el novenario a San José que será recitada después de todas las Misas hasta el 19 de marzo. Después del 19 de marzo, recitaremos después dela Misa de los miércoles la Letanía a San José, día tradicional dedicado a él (como el sábado es a María, viernes al Sagrado Corazón, jueves para el Santísimo Sacramento).
