Pastor's Weekly Message: Sunday, October 24, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The past week I was so caught up in the festivities for my sister’s wedding and then our continuing education days that I missed my weekly column. Thanks to all those who offered their prayers and best wishes for my sister Emily and her new husband Matt.

These past two weekends we have hosted our annual Christ Renews His Parish retreats. Please pray for the men and women who took part in these retreats, that the encounter with Christ they experienced might continue transforming their hearts and filling them with a desire to live more fully as His sons and daughters in the midst of His body, the Church. As everyone who has lived this retreat in the past or has had a similar experience of encounter with Christ and conversion knows from experience, the most difficult part is to keep the momentum going.

We are excited for the young people of our parish who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this week! Bishop Rhoades is very generously coming to our parish twice for two Masses due to the large number of young people who will be confirmed. We are so fortunate that Bishop Rhoades dedicates so much of his time to this important encounter with our young people. He is one of the very few diocesan bishops I know of who administers Confirmation to all of the young people in the diocese himself. I think that this says a lot about his priorities and his love for the people of our diocese.

Please pray for these young people who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, that their hearts might be fully open to the graces that the Holy Spirit desires to give them. Pray also for their parents and sponsors, that they might be living witnesses of the Faith. I am always encouraged by the many confessions of our confirmandi and their sponsors in preparation for their Confirmations.

Speaking of Bishop Rhoades, thank you to everyone who has made you pledges for the Annual Bishop’s Appeal. We are so thankful for your generosity and your promptness. For those who have not yet made a pledge, thank you for prayerfully considering the way that the Lord is calling you to sacrificial generosity in support of the local Church. The Annual Bishop’s Appeal is critical for the financial health not only of our Diocese but also of our parish. You can take a pledge card from the entrance to church or fill it out online.

Recent read: First Things August/September 2021. This issue contained articles about: French political figure Eric Zemmour, Vatican policing of art, divisions in contemporary Catholicism, the threat of artificial intelligence, alternate history, class tensions in America, Eucharistic coherence, and classical music and math.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

La semana pasada estuve muy distraído con las festividades de la boda de mi hermana y luego en los días de educación continua que no hice mi columna semanal. Gracias a todos los que ofrecieron sus oraciones y mejores deseos para mi hermana Emily y su esposo Matt.

Estos dos últimos fines de semana hemos organizado los retiros anuales de Cristo Renueva Su Parroquia. Por favor, oren por los hombres y mujeres que participaron en estos retiros, para que el encuentro con Cristo que experimentaron pueda continuar transformando sus corazones y llenándolos con el deseo de vivir más plenamente como Sus hijos e hijas en medio de Su cuerpo, la Iglesia. Como todos los que han vivido este retiro en el pasado o han tenido una experiencia similar de encuentro con Cristo y conversión saben por experiencia que la parte más difícil es mantener el impulso en marcha.

¡Estamos emocionados por los jóvenes de nuestra parroquia que recibirán el Sacramento de la Confirmación esta semana! El Señor Obispo Rhoades viene muy generosamente a nuestra parroquia dos veces para dos Misas debido a la gran cantidad de jóvenes que serán confirmados. Somos muy afortunados de que el Señor Obispo Rhoades dedique gran parte de su tiempo a este importante encuentro con nuestros jóvenes. Es uno de los pocos obispos diocesanos que conozco que administra el sacramento de la Confirmación a todos los jóvenes de la diócesis. Creo que esto dice mucho sobre sus prioridades y su amor por la gente de nuestra diócesis. Por favor oren por estos jóvenes que recibirán el Sacramento de la Confirmación, para que sus corazones estén completamente abiertos a las gracias que el Espíritu Santo desea darles. Oren también por sus padres y padrinos, para que puedan ser testigos vivos de la Fe. Siempre me alientan las muchas confesiones de los estudiantes y de sus padrinos en preparación para su confirmación.

Hablando del Señor Obispo Rhoades, gracias a todos los que les han hecho su compromiso para la Apelación Anual del Obispo. Estamos muy agradecidos por su generosidad y su prontitud. Para aquellos que aún no han hecho un compromiso, gracias por considerar en oración la forma en que el Señor los está llamando a la generosidad sacrificial en apoyo de la Iglesia local. La Apelación Anual del Obispo es fundamental para la salud financiera no solo de nuestra Diócesis sino también de nuestra parroquia.
