Pastor's Weekly Message: Sunday, May 16
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Last Sunday we heard the news that Fr. Jose will be departing for a phase in his life and vocation next month as he transitions back into the Franciscan Capuchin charism through the Capuchin friars in Puerto Rico. Fr. Jose has blessed our parish in many ways over these past two years, and we will be sad to see him go. We should be filled with joy for him, though, as he seeks to follow God’s will back into the religious life. Fr. Jose’s decision is a good reminder to all of us that we are never done discerning the Lord’s will for our lives.
Fr. Jose’s last Sunday with us will be June 20th. We are in the process of planning an event to thank him for his service and wish him well in his new endeavors. Please note that Fr. Jose has requested no “good-bye” gifts, or at least none that will take up space in his suitcase! Money to help cover moving expenses (especially transporting his car to Puerto Rico) would, however, be helpful should you like to express your thankfulness to him.
Many are probably wandering: “Is another priest coming to our parish to take Fr. Jose’s place?” We look forward to sharing more news about this in the coming weeks!
This Saturday, Bishop Rhoades will ordain two men to the diaconate for our Diocese, Brian Isenbarger and Mark Hellinger. Mark is from the same parish my family attended in Ft. Wayne while I was discerning my vocation. Please pray for them, as they make this final step before their priestly ordination next summer. It is an honor for me to serve as MC for the ordination Masses. In two weeks, at the priestly ordinations, Bishop Rhoades will ordain seven men, the largest ordination class from our Diocese since the 1960s. This will be a moment of real joy!
Thank you to everyone who came to our Solemn Extraordinary Form Mass for the Feast of the Lord’s Ascension. It was great to celebrate this feast on its traditional date, exactly 40 days after Easter. It was so good to see people of different languages and cultures worshiping together as our ancestors did for centuries! I am especially grateful to our choir for preparing such beautiful music, as well as our servers, ushers, and visiting clergy who helped out.
These past three Sundays we have been counting the number of attendees at each Mass to determine our capacity needs during the summer, particularly for our Masses in Spanish. It is possible that we might not need the 3 p.m. Mass during the summer months. We will be sure to give everyone a couple weeks’ notice before making any changes.
Recent read: In a Glass Darkly by Sheridan Le Fanu. These Irish ghost stories were described by one reader as “the ideal reading for after midnight.” I’m not normally still reading (or doing anything other than sleeping!) after midnight, but they were enjoyable bedtime reading. Fortunately, I don’t put much stock in stories about ghosts.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
El domingo pasado nos enteramos de la noticia de que el P. José partirá para una fase en su vida y vocación el próximo mes a medida que regresa a el carisma franciscano-capuchino a través de los frailes capuchinos en Puerto Rico. El P. José ha bendecido nuestra parroquia de muchas maneras en estos últimos dos años, y estaremos tristes de verlo irse. Sin embargo, debemos estar llenos de gozo por él, ya que él busca seguir la voluntad de Dios de vuelta a la vida religiosa.
El último domingo del P. José será el 20 de junio. Estamos planeando un evento para darle las gracias por su servicio y desearle lo mejor en sus nuevos esfuerzos. Tenga en cuenta que el P. José no ha pedido regalos de "despedida", o al menos ninguno que ocupará espacio en su maleta! Sin embargo, el dinero para ayudar a cubrir los gastos de mudanza (especialmente el transporte de su auto a Puerto Rico) sería útil si desea expresarle su gratitud.
Muchos probablemente se están preguntando: ¿"Vendrá otro sacerdote a nuestra parroquia a tomar el lugar del P. José?"? ¡Esperamos poder compartir más noticias al respecto en las próximas semanas!
Este sábado, el monseñor Rhoades ordenará a dos hombres al diaconado de nuestra diócesis, Brian Isenbarger y Mark Hellinger. Mark es de la misma parroquia a la que mi familia asistió en Ft. Wayne mientras yo estaba discerniendo mi vocación. Por favor, oren por ellos, mientras dan este último paso antes de su ordenación sacerdotal el próximo verano. Es un honor para mí servir como MC(maestro de ceremonia) para las misas de ordenación. En dos semanas, en las ordenaciones sacerdotales, monseñor Rhoades ordenará a siete hombres, la clase de ordenación más grande de nuestra diócesis desde la década de 1960. ¡Este será un momento de verdadera alegría!
Gracias a todos los que vinieron a la Misa Solemne de Forma Extraordinaria para la Fiesta de la Ascensión del Señor. Fue estupendo celebrar esta fiesta en su fecha tradicional, exactamente 40 días después de Pascua. ¡Fue bueno ver a la gente de diferentes idiomas y culturas adorando juntos como lo hicieron nuestros antepasados durante siglos! Estoy especialmente agradecido con el coro por preparar música tan hermosa, así como nuestros servidores, ujieres, y el clero visitante que ayudó.
Estos dos últimos domingos hemos estado contando el número de asistentes a cada misa para determinar nuestras necesidades de capacidad durante el verano, especialmente para nuestras misas en español. Es posible que no necesitemos la misa de 3 p.m. durante el verano. Nos aseguraremos de avisar a todos con un par de semanas de anticipación antes de hacer cualquier cambio.
