Pastor's Weekly Message: Sunday, June 13th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We announced last Sunday that our new parochial vicar is Fr. Logan Parrish. I was able to participate in some of his ordination festivities last weekend and spent some time getting to know his parents. He is thrilled to be coming to our parish and I think that you will enjoy getting to know him very much as well. Fr. Parrish is the oldest of ten children and is from Ft. Wayne. He speaks Spanish and is excited for the chance to continue improving his Spanish skills. I’m sure that opportunities will abound! His first Sunday here will be June 27. We will have a welcome event for him soon.

We also announced last week via social media that our school has a new principal: Mrs. Virginia Muñoz. She is the wife of Deacon Giovani Muñoz and mother to six wonderful children, all of whom have attended, currently attend, or will soon attend St. John’s. Mrs. Muñoz is almost done with her third master’s degree in education leadership and recently became eligible to serve as a school administrator, after serving as a classroom teacher, ESL specialist, and in other capacities at Goshen Community Schools. She has served for the past three years as Religious Education Coordinator here at St. John’s. Our selection committee was very impressed by her application and interview and we are confident that she is going to be a fantastic leader for our parish school. Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Muñoz!

Fr. Jose will have one more Sunday with us, but his going away party is today at 2 p.m. We look forward to celebrating him together, as well as bringing our parish together for a social event for the first time in quite a while. Don’t miss it – it’s going to be quite the party! For those who might not be able to participate on the 13th, there is also a “drive through” farewell for Fr. Jose at 2 p.m. on Saturday the 19th, which is his last weekend with us. Fr. Jose’s last Masses at St. John’s will be on Monday, June 21st.

Today is the first Sunday of the restoration of the obligation to attend Holy Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. The following groups of persons are still dispensed:

· Those who are seriously ill, exhibit flu-like symptoms and/or may have a contagious disease (including quarantine due to exposure).

· Those who are unable to attend Mass through no fault of their own (e.g. transportation issue).

· Those who are homebound and/or incapacitated due to age, infirmity and/or medical restrictions.

· Those who have compromised health conditions and/or at high risk of contracting the virus.

· Those who are caretakers of person who are sick or of persons at high-risk of serious illness if they contract Covid virus.

Recent read: Empty Planet: The shock of global population decline by Darrell Bricker and John Ibbitson. Many people, especially politicians and academics, are under the impression that the world’s population is growing rapidly and needs to be controlled. The authors of this volume are very secular academics from Canada, but thoroughly disprove the myth of the need for population control.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

El domingo pasado anunciamos que nuestro nuevo vicario parroquial es el P. Logan Parrish. Tuve la oportunidad de participar en algunas de sus festividades de ordenación el fin de semana pasado y pasé tiempo conociendo a sus padres. Él está encantado de venir a nuestra parroquia y también creo que usted disfrutará conocerlo. El P. Parrish es el mayor de diez hermanos y es de Ft. Wayne. Habla español y está emocionado por la oportunidad de continuar mejorando sus habilidades en español. ¡Estoy seguro de que abundarán las oportunidades! Su primer domingo aquí será el 27 de junio. Pronto tendremos un evento de bienvenida para él.

La semana pasada también anunciamos a través de las redes sociales que nuestra escuela tiene una nueva directora: La Sra. Virginia Muñoz. Ella es la esposa del Diácono Giovani Muñoz y madre de seis maravillosos hijos, todos los cuales han asistido, asisten actualmente, o pronto asistirán a la escuela San Juan. La Sra. Muñoz casi termina su tercera maestría en liderazgo educativo y recientemente ha sido elegible para servir como administradora de la escuela, después de servir como maestra de aula, especialista de ESL, y en otras capacidades en las Escuelas Comunitarias de Goshen. Ella ha servido durante los últimos tres años como coordinadora de educación religiosa aquí en San Juan. Nuestro comité de selección quedó muy impresionado por su solicitud y entrevista y estamos seguros de que ella va a ser una líder fantástica para nuestra escuela parroquial. ¡Por favor, únase a mí para felicitar a la Sra. Muñoz!

El P. José estará con nosotros un domingo más, pero su fiesta de despedida es hoy a las 2 p.m. Esperamos celebrarlo juntos, así como reunir a nuestra parroquia para un evento social por primera vez en bastante tiempo. No te lo pierdas ,¡va a ser toda una fiesta! Para aquellos que no puedan participar el día 13, también hay una despedida "en coche" para el P. José a las 2 p.m. el sábado 19, lo cual es su último fin de semana con nosotros. Las últimas Misas del P. José en San Juan serán el lunes 21 de junio.

Hoy es el primer domingo del restablecimiento de la obligación de asistir a la Santa Misa los domingos y días santos de obligación. Se siguen dispensando los siguientes grupos de personas:

· Aquellos que están gravemente enfermos, presentan síntomas similares a los de la gripe y/o pueden tener una enfermedad contagiosa (incluida la cuarentena debido a la exposición).

· Aquellos que no pueden asistir a la misa por causas ajenas a su voluntad (por ejemplo, por problemas de transporte).

· Aquellos que están en casa y/o incapacitados debido a la edad, enfermedad y/o restricciones médicas.

· Aquellos que tienen condiciones de salud comprometidas y/o alto riesgo de contraer el virus.

· Aquellos que son cuidadores de personas enfermas o de personas con alto riesgo de enfermedad grave si contraen el virus Covid.
