Pastor's Weekly Message: Jan. 24, 2021
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As noted last Sunday, this weekend we observe a sad occasion on Friday, January 22: the 48th anniversary of the legalization of abortion in the United States. The over 60 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. Hopefully we all observed this day as a day of penance and prayer. Maybe you could dedicate the 22nd of each month to this important intention, or your Friday penance one Friday per month?
Tomorrow is the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. The Apostle of the Gentiles, as he is known, went from being the greatest persecutor of the Faith to its most ardent herald. This is an important reality for us to reflect upon as the Church experiences so much persecution today. We anticipate the sad reality of a federal administration led by the second Catholic president in our nation’s history that is broadly expected to lead a wide-ranging assault upon religious liberty. Elsewhere in the world, even harsher persecution is felt by the Church. Last week in Nigeria, a priest was kidnapped and murdered: Fr. John Gbakaan “was allegedly executed with a machete in such a brutal manner that identification was hardly possible” according to the Pontifical Mission Society. May the soul of this courageous priest rest in peace with the Lord He was privileged to make present in the Eucharist. St. Paul’s conversion is a light in this darkness, showing us that it is possible for even the greatest enemies of the Church to be converted and to give their own lives for love of Christ. We should be inspired to pray and fast for all those who threaten the liberty of Holy Mother Church, whether they be outside or inside Her fold.
The Conversion of St. Paul also reminds me of a happier reality: One of the beautiful aspects of our own parish is the large number of converts to the Catholic faith present among our parishioners, as well as the large number of Catholics who have returned to the Faith after powerful experiences of conversion. One of the most rewarding aspects of my priesthood has been to walk with those who are discovering the person of Jesus Christ and the Church He founded. A young man (not from our parish) who entered the Church in 2019 whom I have helped to guide during his conversion shared with me recently that he is applying for the seminary. Other converts have exercised moral courage or come to contribute to the life of the Church in powerful ways. I admire and am inspired by their courage and witness.
Recent read: The Light of Christ by Thomas Joseph White, O.P. This was a re-read because I went through the book again with a convert for whom I was doing private instruction. The book has become my go-to for giving people an introduction to the Catholic faith.

Como se señaló el pasado domingo, este fin de semana celebramos una triste ocasión el viernes 22 de enero: el 48 aniversario de la legalización del aborto en Estados Unidos. Los más de 60 millones de abortos desde las decisiones de 1973 de Roe v. Wade y Doe v. Bolton reflejan con una magnitud desgarradora lo que el Papa Francisco quiere decir con una "cultura desahogada". Se nos recuerda una y otra vez en las Escrituras que busquemos la ayuda del Señor, y como personas de fe, creemos que nuestras oraciones son escuchadas. Esperemos que todos hayamos observado este día como un día de penitencia y oración. ¿Quizás podrías dedicar el 22 de cada mes a esta importante intención, o en su penitencia del viernes un viernes por mes?
Mañana es la fiesta de la conversión de San Pablo. El Apóstol de los gentiles, como se le conoce, pasó de ser el mayor perseguidor de la Fe a ser su heraldo más ardiente. Esta es una realidad importante sobre la que reflexionar, ya que la Iglesia experimenta tanta persecución hoy en día. Anticipamos la triste realidad de una administración federal dirigida por el segundo presidente católico en la historia de nuestra nación que se espera ampliamente que lidere un amplio asalto a la libertad religiosa. En otras partes del mundo, la Iglesia siente una persecución aún más dura. La semana pasada, en Nigeria, un sacerdote fue secuestrado y asesinado: El P. John Gbakaan "fue presuntamente ejecutado con un machete de una manera tan brutal que la identificación era difícilmente posible" según la Pontificia Sociedad Misionera. Que el alma de este valiente sacerdote descanse en paz con el Señor que tuvo el privilegio de hacer presente en la Eucaristía. La conversión de San Pablo es una luz en esta oscuridad, que nos muestra que es posible que incluso los mayores enemigos de la Iglesia se conviertan y den su propia vida por amor a Cristo. Debemos inspirarnos a orar y ayunar por todos aquellos que amenazan la libertad de la Santa Madre Iglesia, ya sea que estén fuera o dentro de su redil.
La conversión de San Pablo también me recuerda una realidad más feliz: Uno de los hermosos aspectos de nuestra propia parroquia es el gran número de conversos a la fe católica presente entre nuestros feligreses, así como el gran número de católicos que han regresado a la fe después de poderosas experiencias de conversión. Uno de los aspectos más gratificantes de mi sacerdocio ha sido caminar con aquellos que están descubriendo a la persona de Jesucristo y a la Iglesia que él fundó. Un joven (no de nuestra parroquia) que entró en la Iglesia en 2019 a quien he ayudado a guiar durante su conversión compartió conmigo recientemente que está solicitando el seminario. Otros conversos han ejercido valor moral o han venido a contribuir a la vida de la Iglesia de maneras poderosas. Admiro y me inspira su valentía y testimonio.
