Pastor's Weekly Column: Sunday, January 16th
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We are back to the “green Sundays” of Ordinary Time today. It won’t be long until we are starting Lent, though! Ash Wednesday is less than two months away.
Another milestone for the implementation of our Parish Priority Plan – this week our team meets for a communication training session. We look forward to learning better how to keep you informed about the great progress we are making as we work to implement this plan.
Next weekend marks the tragic anniversary of the legalization of abortion in the United States. On Friday, hundreds of thousands of people will march on Washington to protest the deprivation of the right to life of the unborn. If we are unable to be there with them, we should accompany them with our prayers. This Saturday, January 22nd, is a national day of penance and fasting for an end to abortion and the restoration of the legal right to life for the unborn. This year’s day of penance and fasting is more important than ever as we await the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs vs. Whole Women’s Health (the Mississippi abortion case). This case has the best chance in a generation of restoring the legal right to life to the unborn, or at least of allowing each state to set its own abortion law without interference from the Court. The case has probably already been decided by the court, but prayer works outside of time.
Here locally, we have the chance to join Catholics and many other people of good will for our own pro-life rally organized by Right to Life Michiana at noon on Saturday, January 22nd at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Elkhart. I will be there and hope to see lots of St. John’s parishioners too!
Recent read: The Family Reunion by T.S. Eliot. Eliot is mostly known as a poet and literary critic, but his theatrical works make for interesting reading as well.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Hoy volvemos a los "domingos verdes" del Tiempo Ordinario. Sin embargo, ¡no pasará mucho tiempo para comenzar la Cuaresma! Faltan menos de dos meses para el Miércoles de Ceniza.
Otro logro para el comité de la implementación de nuestro Plan de Prioridades Parroquiales: esta semana nuestro equipo se reúne para una sesión de capacitación en comunicación. Esperamos aprender mejor cómo mantenerlo informado sobre el gran progreso que estamos haciendo a medida que trabajamos para implementar este plan.
El próximo fin de semana se conmemora el trágico aniversario de la legalización del aborto en Estados Unidos. El viernes, cientos de miles de personas marcharán en Washington para protestar por la privación del derecho a la vida de los no nacidos. Si no podemos estar allí con ellos, debemos acompañarlos con nuestras oraciones. Este sábado, 22 de enero, es un día nacional de penitencia y ayuno para poner fin al aborto y la restauración del derecho legal a la vida para los no nacidos. El día de penitencia y ayuno de este año es más importante que nunca mientras esperamos la decisión de la Corte Suprema en Dobbs vs. Salud de Mujeres Enenteras (el caso del aborto en Mississippi). Este caso tiene la mejor oportunidad en una generación de restaurar el derecho legal a la vida para los no nacidos, o al menos de permitir que cada estado establezca su propia ley de aborto sin interferencia de la Corte. El caso probablemente ya ha sido decidido por la corte, pero la oración funciona fuera del tiempo.
Aquí localmente, tenemos la oportunidad de unirnos a católicos y muchas otras personas de buena voluntad para nuestro propio rally pro-vida organizado por el Derecho a la Vida Michiana al mediodía del sábado 22 de enero en la Iglesia Católica Santo Tomás Apóstol en Elkhart. ¡Estaré allí y espero ver a muchos feligreses de St. John también!
