Pastor's Message: Weekly Update, Oct. 4
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Fr. Jose is still away on his retreat but will return tomorrow. Please pray for safe travels for him! We are happy to welcome Fr. John Herman and Fr. Dominic Vermer this weekend to assist us with Masses in Spanish. I am so grateful to have brother priest close by (and some not exactly that close!) who are eager to help us in celebrating the sacraments. Many priests who have helped us out here at St. John’s have told me that they particularly enjoy helping at our parish. A big part of that is how friendly and welcoming our parishioners are. Thank you so much for always being so open and welcoming to our visiting priests, and also for your understanding when Fr. Jose and I need to be away. At other parishes it is not necessary to get outside help, but with nine Sunday Masses currently on our schedule (some of them being offered concurrently in the church and gym) it is simply impossible for one of us to do it all on his own. Another reminder to keep praying for more priestly vocations and encouraging the young men in our parish to consider whether God might be calling them to lay down their lives for Him!
This week is the annual Clergy Continuing Education Days in our Diocese. Normally we would all gather together at Pokagon State Park. This year we will greatly miss this opportunity for fraternity as the sessions will be held virtually. Having just returned from his retreat, Fr. Jose will hold down the fort here at St. John’s and celebrate all the Masses, while I will be getting together with a small group of priests to participate remotely and still enjoy some priestly fraternity.
This Saturday I will be fulfilling my duties on the Deacon Scrutiny Board, interviewing candidates for the diaconate who are currently in formation. Please pray for these men who are preparing to take up a life of service in the Church.
Recent read: Coming Apart: The state of white America, 1960-2010 by Charles Murray. The author is a controversial conservative / libertarian sociologist. The book is a fascinating exploration of the increasing divide in upper and lower classes in America. Highly recommended.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
El P. José aún está en su retiro, pero regresará mañana. ¡Por favor, oren por su seguridad! Le damos la bienvenida al P. John Herman y al P. Dominic Verner este fin de semana por ayudarnos con las Misas en español. Estoy muy agradecido de tener a mis hermanos sacerdote cerca (¡y algunos lejos!) quienes están deseosos para ayudarnos a celebrar los sacramentos. Muchos sacerdotes que nos han ayudado me han dicho que disfrutan ayudar particularmente aquí en nuestra parroquia. Muchas gracias por ser amables y por ser muy cordiales con los sacerdotes que vienen a ayudar, y también por su comprensión cuando el P. José y yo necesitamos estar lejos. En otras parroquias no es necesario conseguir ayuda externa, pero con nueve Misas dominicales actualmente en nuestro horario (algunas de ellas se ofrecen simultáneamente en la iglesia y el gimnasio) es simplemente imposible para uno de nosotros hacerlo todo. ¡Otro recordatorio es seguir orando por más vocaciones sacerdotales y alentar a los jóvenes de nuestra parroquia a considerar si Dios podría estar llamándolos a dar su vida por Él!
Esta semana son los días de Educación Anual Continua del Clero en nuestra diócesis. Normalmente nos reuníamos en el Parque Estatal Pokagon. Este año perderemos enormemente esta oportunidad de fraternidad, ya que las sesiones se llevarán a cabo virtualmente. Recien llegado de su retiro, el P. José se va a encargar de todo y celebrará todas las Misas, mientras yo me reúno con un grupo pequeño de sacerdotes para participar remotamente y aún así disfrutar de alguna fraternidad sacerdotal.
Este sábado cumpliré con mis obligaciones en la Junta de Escrutinio Diaconal, entrevistando a los candidatos para el diaconado que actualmente se están formando. Por favor, oren por estos hombres que se están preparando para tomar una vida de servicio en la Iglesia.
