Pastor's Easter Message: April 4, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Whether you are visiting St. John’s for the first time or are a life-long parishioner, we are glad to have you celebrating Easter with us today! On this great feast, we rejoice in the glory of Christ’s Resurrection, an event that not only changed human history but transformed the very nature of our universe. Death is no longer in oppression over us, but life has won the victory. The crucifixion of Christ was not the end of the story, which means that death will not be the end of our story either. Celebrating Easter is so important because Christ gives us the promise of sharing in His victory over sin and death through eternal life with Him in Heaven.

Easter is not just an event to remember but a reality to continue living in our lives. That is why we will continue to celebrate Easter for the rest of the week in the Octave of Easter, in which the joy of Christ’s Resurrection echoes anew each day. Then, the Easter season will continue for 50 days, just as Christ remained on the earth for 50 days, appearing to His disciples and giving them the commission to evangelize, until His ascension into Heaven. The 50-day joy of Easter should be lived just as intensely as the 40-day preparation of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving during Lent.

Congratulations are in order to the catechumens who were baptized at the Easter Vigil, as well as those who were baptized in other Christian communities but came to embrace Christ’s Church through their profession of faith and the Sacrament of Confirmation. We are overjoyed to welcome you now to the banquet of the Eucharist. We extend thanks as well to their sponsors and catechists who worked so diligently to prepare them for this day.

There are so many people who deserve our thanks for their efforts throughout these days of preparation for this greatest feast of the year: Our musicians under the direction of James Richardson and Felipe García, who spent so much time rehearsing and elevating our minds to the Lord through their music; Heather Brunswick and her team of church decorators who have made our church look so beautiful (and – of course! – all those who contributed for flower memorials); the reverent servers under the direction of our pastoral associate, Johnny Evangelista; the sacristans who prepared for each of the liturgies; the ushers who put in so much extra time coming early and staying late each day; our church cleaners who are keeping us safe and healthy; our new media team under the direction of Brian Sapp and Emmanuel Escobedo, who made sure not only that Mass was available to those not able to come to church, but made sure that all the special moments of the Triddum were captured; and those who helped out even at the last minute because someone asked them to or because they just saw a need. You cannot imagine how much goes on behind the scenes to make the Sacred Triduum possible.

Don’t let your celebration of Easter end with dinner today! Continuing celebrating throughout the Octave and all the rest of this holy season.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Si está de visita por primera vez en San Juan o es feligres de toda de la vida, nos alegra que esté aqui con nostoros hoy celebrando la Pascua! En esta gran fiesta, nos regocijamos en la gloria de la Resurrección de Cristo, un acontecimiento que no sólo cambió la historia humana, sino que transformó la naturaleza misma de nuestro universo. La vida ha ganado la victoria, la muerte ya no es una opresión sobre nosotros. La crucifixión de Cristo no fué el fin de la historia, lo que significa que la muerte tampoco será el fin de nuestra historia. Celebrar la Pascua es muy importante porque Cristo nos promete compartir Su victoria sobre el pecado y la muerte a través de la vida eterna con El en el cielo.

La Pascua no es sólo un acontecimiento para recordar, sino una realidad para seguir viviendo en nuestras vidas. Es por eso que continuaremos celebrando la Pascua por el resto de la semana en la Octava Pascual, en la que el gozo de la Resurrección de Cristo resuena cada día. Entonces, la temporada de Pascua continuará durante 50 días, tal y como Cristo permaneció en la tierra durante 50 días, apareciendo a sus discípulos y dándoles la comisión de evangelizar, hasta Su Ascensión al cielo. La alegría de la Pascua de 50 días debe vivirse intensamente como la preparación de la oración, el ayuno y el donativo de 40 días durante la Cuaresma.

Felicitamos a los catecúmenos que fueron bautizados en la Vigilia Pascual, así como aquellos que fueron bautizados en otras comunidades cristianas, pero que vinieron aceptar a la iglesia de Cristo a través de su profesión de fe y a través del Sacramento de la Confirmación. Estamos muy contentos de darles la bienvenida hoy al banquete de la Eucaristía. Damos gracias también a sus padrinos y catequistas que trabajaron con tanta diligencia para prepararlos para este día.

Hay muchas personas que merecen nuestro agradecimiento por sus esfuerzos a lo largo de estos días de preparación para la fiesta más grande del año: nuestros músicos bajo la dirección de James Richardson y Felipe García, que pasaron mucho tiempo ensayando y elevaron nuestro mentes al Señor a través de su música; a Heather Brunswick y su equipo de decoradores de la iglesia que han hecho que nuestra iglesia se vea hermosa (y por supuesto todos los que contribuyeron para la flores de conmemorativos.); a los acolitos bajo la dirección de nuestro asociado pastoral , Johnny Evangelista; los sacristanes que preparón para liturgia;

los ujieres que ponen tanto tiempo extra llegando temprano y quedándose tarde cada día; a nuestros limpiadores de la iglesia que nos mantienen seguros y saludables; a nuestro nuevo equipo de medios sociales bajo la dirección de Brian Sapp y Emmanuel Escobedo, que se aseguraron no sólo de que la misa estuviera disponible para aquellos que no podían venir a la iglesia, sino que se aseguraron de que todos los momentos especiales del Triddum fueran capturados;

y los que ayudaron incluso en el último minuto porque alguien les pidió o porque simplemente vieron una necesidad. No se imaginan todo lo que pasa detrás de las camaras para hacer posible el Triduo Sagrado.

¡No dejes que tu celebración de Pascua termine con la cena de hoy! Continua celebrando a lo largo de la Octava y el resto de esta temporada sagrada.

¡San Juan Evangelista, ruega por nosotros! ¡Verdaderamente, Él ha resucitado, Aleluya!
