Pastor's Letter: June 28, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We rejoice once again this weekend with the 67 children who received the Lord for the first time in Holy Communion yesterday. Some of the externals were different this year – especially regarding the limited attendance – but the most important part was the same as always. Jesus’s real presence in the Blessed Sacrament is unchanged by the external differences to which we are currently accustoming ourselves. Please pray that these children will always receive Jesus in Holy Communion with as much love and reverence with which they received Him for the first time.

We announced last Sunday that our school principal, Mr. John Loflin, will not be returning for the 2020-2021 school year. The School Advisory Board and I – with the invaluable support of our diocesan Catholic Schools Office – are hard at work looking for a new principal. Please pray for the success of this very important endeavor!

This Saturday is Independence Day. Join us for Mass in English at 9 a.m. on the 4th to pray for our country.

Our Envisioning Team for the Next Generation Parish initiative is wrapping up its work. It has been a challenge to continue working together and with our consultant during the pandemic, but I am proud of the great work that this excellent team has done. We will be sharing our renewed parish vision with you soon. I am sure that you will be excited to what the team has prepared.

I will be away spending time with my family for our annual 4th of July get together starting Friday and continuing through all of next week. I am looking forward to some rest and relaxation and the rare chance to have our whole family together for an extended period of time.

Goshen Hospital is starting to allow visitors, including clergy, in some limited situations. If you find yourself in the hospital, make sure to request a visit from a priest as soon as possible, especially if you or a loved one might be in danger of death. It seems that visitors may be more likely to be allowed in the emergency department than in the main floors of the hospital. I was able to visit a parishioner there last week – it was my first time making a sick call in quite a while. Know that your parish priests are always just a phone call away during emergencies. You can reach us by calling the parish office and dialing 9 to reach our emergency line.

Recent read: Go Down, Moses by William Faulkner. This is a collection of Faulkner’s short stories that form the saga of an inter-racial family in the deep south following the Civil War. Faulkner’s notions of race are doubtless imperfect and not up to modern standards, but he does expose in many ways the hypocrisy of racism and the commonality of human nature across racial divides.

Queridos hermanos en Cristo,

Nos regocijamos una vez más este fin de semana con los 67 niños que recibieron al Señor por primera vez ayer en la Santa Comunión. Algunos de los externos fueron diferentes este año – especialmente en lo que respecta a la asistencia limitada, pero la parte más importante fue la misma de siempre. La presencia real de Jesús en el Santísimo Sacramento no ha cambiado por las diferencias externas a las que nos acostumbramos actualmente. Por favor oren para que estos niños reciban siempre con mucho amor y reverencia a Jesús en la Santa Comunión como lo recibieron la primera vez.

Anunciamos el domingo pasado que nuestro director de escuela, el Sr. John Loflin, no regresará para el año escolar 2020-2021. El Consejo Asesor Escolar y yo, con el inestimable apoyo de nuestra Oficina diocesana de Escuelas Católicas, estamos trabajando arduamente en la búsqueda de un nuevo director. ¡Por favor oren por el éxito de este esfuerzo tan importante!

Este sábado es el Día de la Independencia. Acompáñenos en la misa en inglés a las 9 a.m. del día 4 para orar por nuestro país.

Nuestro equipo de ideación para la iniciativa de la Parroquia de la Próxima Generación está terminando su trabajo. Ha sido un reto seguir trabajando juntos y con nuestro consultor durante la pandemia, pero estoy orgulloso del gran trabajo que este excelente equipo ha realizado. Pronto compartiremos nuestra renovada visión parroquial con ustedes. Estoy seguro de que usted estará emocionado con lo que el equipo ha preparado.

Estaré fuera pasando tiempo con mi familia para nuestra reunión anual del 4 anual de julio, comenzando el viernes y continuando durante toda la próxima semana. Estoy deseando descansar y relajarme y tener la rara oportunidad de tener a toda nuestra familia junta por un largo período de tiempo.

El Hospital de Goshen está empezando a permitir a los visitantes, incluyendo al clero, en algunas situaciones limitadas. Si se encuentra en el hospital, asegúrese de solicitar una visita de un sacerdote lo antes posible, especialmente si usted o un ser querido puede estar en peligro de muerte. Parece que es más probable que se permita a los visitantes en el departamento de emergencias que en los pisos principales del hospital. Pude visitar a un feligres allí la semana pasada – era mi primera vez haciendo una llamada de enfermos después de un largo tiempo. Sepa que los sacerdotes de su parroquia siempre están a solo una llamada de distancia durante las emergencias. Puede comunicarse con nosotros llamando a la oficina parroquial y marcando 9 para llegar a nuestra línea de emergencia.
