Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, November 21
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. This is the most recently establish major feast that we celebrate each year, having been created by Pope Pius XI in 1925 to emphasize the social kingship of Christ. The past couple of Sundays we have focused on what each of us loves and what our own loves and desires reveal about us. Thinking about the social kingship of Christ today, we should pause and reflect on what our society loves and desires. Pius XI established this feast at a time when formerly Christian societies were increasingly turning away from the Gospel – especially the atheistic ideologies of communism and fascism, the latter of which promoted a neo-pagan worship of the State. What does our society worship, and how is it affecting us?
Next Sunday we will begin the holy season of Advent. This season is a great chance for us to re-focus on our own hearts as the place where Christ wants to be born. What do you need to clear out to make more space for Him?
We look forward to many celebrations this week as we give thanks to God for all of his blessings, both material and spiritual. I am edified each year by the many people who choose to make the Eucharist (the original “thanksgiving”) a part of their celebration. We will have Mass at 9 a.m. in English and 11 a.m. in Spanish. (Please note the time change in Spanish – this will allow Fr. Logan and I to spend time with our families at Thanksgiving as well, since family Thanksgivings in the US are usually mid-day or early afternoon affairs.) This year I am blessed to welcome my whole family to stay with us for a few days at the rectory. Please note as well that the morning Mass the day after Thanksgiving will be delayed until 9 a.m.
Recent read: The Quiet American by Graham Greene. This was the last of Greene’s major novels that I had yet to read. It expresses his cynical appraisal of the US’s involvement of the Vietnam conflict.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Hoy celebramos la solemnidad de Cristo Rey. Esta es la fiesta más reciente establecida que celebramos cada año, habiendo sido creada por el Papa Pío XI en 1925 para enfatizar la realeza social de Cristo. En los últimos pares de domingos nos hemos centrado en lo que cada uno de nosotros amamos y lo que nuestros propios amores y deseos revelan sobre nosotros. Pensando en la realeza social de Cristo hoy, debemos hacer una pausa y reflexionar sobre lo que nuestra sociedad ama y desea. Pío XI estableció esta fiesta en un momento en el que las sociedades anteriormente cristianas se alejaban cada vez más del Evangelio, especialmente de las ideologías ateas del comunismo y el fascismo, la última de las cuales promovía un culto neopagano al Estado. ¿Qué adora nuestra sociedad y cómo nos está afectando?
El próximo domingo comenzaremos la época santa del Adviento. Esta temporada es una gran oportunidad para que nos centremos de nuevo en nuestros propios corazones como el lugar donde Cristo quiere nacer. ¿Qué necesitas despejar para hacer más espacio para Él?
Esperamos con interés muchas celebraciones esta semana mientras damos gracias a Dios por todas sus bendiciones, tanto materiales como espirituales. Cada año me edifican el número de personas que eligen hacer de la Eucaristía (la "acción de gracias" original) una parte de su celebración. Tendremos Misa a las 9 a.m. en inglés y a las 11 a.m. en español. (Tenga en cuenta el cambio de hora en español: esto nos permitirá al P. Logan y a mí pasar tiempo con nuestras familias en el Día de Acción de Gracias también, ya que el día de Acción de Gracias familiar en los Estados Unidos suelen ser asuntos al mediodía o temprano en la tarde). Este año tengo la bendición de dar la bienvenida a mi familia para que se quede con nosotros por unos días en la rectoría. También tenga en cuenta que la Misa del día después del Día de Acción de Gracias de la mañana será a las 9 a.m.
