Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, January 1st
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
A blessed Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, and a happy and holy new year to you! As we begin this year of our Lord, 2023, it is propitious that the year begins on the Lord’s day. (In many languages, the word for “Sunday” is derived from the Latin, dominus, meaning “Lord.”) It is as if Christ were inviting us to dedicate in a particular way this year of 2023 to Him, beginning that year on His day.
Many people make new year’s resolutions, such as losing weight, exercising, giving up a bad habit, etc. What are your spiritual new year’s resolutions? Have you resolved to be more faithful to attendance at Holy Mass, to dedicate time each day to prayer, or to leave behind a particular sin?
With Christmas and New Year’s falling on a Sunday, the Christmas season is somewhat different this year. We will observe the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord next Sunday, January 8th. Normally, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season the following Sunday, but this year it will be observed on the next day, Monday, January 9th.
On Saturday, 18 new deacons will be ordained for our diocese. Please pray for their diaconal ministry!
We are grateful to Father Matthew Gummes for celebrating the 1:00 and 2:45 p.m. Masses today! Welcome Father Matthew. He is a Carmelite friar and a doctoral candidate at the University of Notre Dame. I am grateful for the opportunity to spend some time with my family and look forward to being back later this week. Please pray that my return trip goes better than the last time that I tried to travel around Christmas!
Recent read: Imperiofobia y Leyenda Negra: Roma, Rusia, Estados Unidos y el Imperio Español by María Elvira Roca Barea. This was my favorite book of the year. In it, the author locates the long-disproven but frustratingly popular anti-Spanish bias in world history within a broader anti-imperial bias. Truly fascinating.

¡Una bendita solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios, y un feliz y santo año nuevo para ti! Al comenzar este año de nuestro Señor, 2023, es propicio que el año comience en el día del Señor. (En muchos idiomas, la palabra para "domingo" se deriva del latín, dominus, que significa "Señor"). Es como si Cristo nos invitara a dedicarle de manera particular este año de 2023 a Él, comenzando este año en su día.
Muchas personas hacen propósitos de año nuevo, como perder peso, hacer ejercicio, renunciar a un mal hábito, etc. ¿Cuáles son tus resoluciones espirituales de año nuevo? ¿Has decidido ser más fiel a la asistencia a la Santa Misa, dedicar tiempo cada día a la oración, o dejar atrás un pecado en particular?
Con la Navidad y el Año Nuevo cayendo en domingo, la temporada navideña es algo diferente este año. Observaremos la solemnidad de la Epifanía del Señor el próximo domingo 8 de enero. Normalmente, la Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor cierra la temporada navideña el domingo siguiente, pero este año se observará al día siguiente, lunes 9 de enero.
El sábado, serán ordenados 18 nuevos diáconos para nuestra diócesis. ¡Por favor, oren por su ministerio diaconal!
¡Agradecemos al Padre Matthew Gummes por celebrar hoy las Misas de 1:00 y 2:45 p.m.! Bienvenido Padre Mateo. Es fraile carmelita y candidato a doctorado en la Universidad de Notre Dame. Estoy agradecido por la oportunidad de pasar tiempo con mi familia y espero volver a finales de esta semana. ¡Por favor, oren para que mi viaje de regreso sea mejor que la última vez que intenté viajar en Navidad!
