Pastor's Message: Annual Bishop's Appeal

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today is our parish kickoff of our Annual Bishop’s Appeal. We celebrate the wonderful work of the Gospel being done in the parishes of our Diocese and the ways that God enables us to work together as a Diocese to accomplish the Church’s mission.

This year’s Appeal is particularly important for the financial health of our Diocese and our parish. As you can see in the bulletin each week, we are struggling to meet our weekly collection targets. Over the past few years, we have also not met our Bishop’s Appeal goal, and the parish has had to make up the difference from our general budget. Doing so limits our parish’s ability to fulfill our mission by constraining our annual budget with this added expense. This year in particular, having to make up a Bishop’s Appeal shortfall from our general budget would be particularly hard on our parish’s finances.

In recognition of the difficult economic circumstances that many people are facing, Bishop Rhoades has made the decision to decrease the overall Bishop’s Appeal goal by $500,000. This means that our parish goal will be slightly lower this year, and hopefully also more achievable. Exceeding our goal will help us to make up for the COVID-related shortfalls we are currently experiencing. I am so grateful to everyone who generously supports the Annual Bishop’s Appeal through our parish. Your generosity makes possible our existence as a Catholic Church. Without a connection to a successor of the Apostles – a bishop – there is no Catholic Church. We tend to focus a lot on our own parish, but we can forget that Jesus did not establish parishes. The original particular Church was the diocese, gathered around its bishop. We are fortunate to have been led by wonderful bishops these past many decades, but the Bishop’s Appeal is not really about the Bishop. It is about the work of the Church being done in our Diocese. It is not an outside organization that we support but our very own family in Christ.

For myself, I think of giving to the Annual Bishop’s Appeal and to our parish as more like putting money in my savings account than giving it away to someone else. When I put money in my savings or retirement account, it means it is not available to spend right away, so it is in some ways an expense, but it is ultimately going to be there for me or my family if they are in need. Sharing our material blessings with God through his Church is sharing with our own family.

[English only] Recent read: Paradiso by Dante Alighieri, translated by Anthony Esolen. This is the final installment in Dante’s Divine Comedy, one of the great classics of Western literature. Dante’s synthesis of Thomistic philosophy and Catholic vision not only of the afterlife but of all of life is probably the most profound expression of Christian faith in all of Western literature. Esolen’s beautiful translation also brings alive the poetry of the original Italian as well.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Hoy es el inicio de la Apelación Anual del Obispo. Celebramos la obra maravillosa del Evangelio que se realiza en las parroquias de nuestra diócesis y las formas en que Dios nos permite trabajar juntos como diócesis para cumplir la misión de la Iglesia.

La Apelación de este año es particularmente importante para la salud financiera de nuestra Diócesis y nuestra parroquia. Como puede ver en el boletín cada semana, estamos batallando para cumplir con nuestros objetivos de colección semanal. En los últimos años, tampoco hemos cumplido con la meta de la Apelación del Obispo, y la parroquia ha tenido que compensar la diferencia con respecto a nuestro presupuesto general. Hacerlo limita la capacidad de nuestra parroquia para cumplir nuestra misión limitando nuestro presupuesto anual con este gasto adicional. En particular, este año, el tener que compensar el déficit de la Apelación del Obispo con nuestro presupuesto general sería particularmente difícil para las finanzas de nuestra parroquia.

En reconocimiento de las difíciles circunstancias económicas a las que se enfrentan muchas personas, el Obispo Rhoades ha tomado la decisión de reducir la meta general de la Apelación del Obispo por $500,000. Esto significa que nuestra meta parroquial será ligeramente más baja este año, y esperemos que también sea más alcanzable. Superar nuestro objetivo nos ayudará a compensar las deficiencias relacionadas con COVID que estamos experimentando actualmente. Estoy muy agradecido a todos los que apoyan generosamente la Apelación Anual del Obispo a través de nuestra parroquia. Su generosidad hace posible nuestra existencia como Iglesia Católica. Tendemos a centrarnos mucho en nuestra propia parroquia, pero solemos olvidar que Jesús no estableció parroquias. La Iglesia original era la diócesis, reunida alrededor de su obispo. En estas últimas décadas, hemos sido afortunados de ser dirigidos por obispos maravillosos, pero la apelación del Obispo no es realmente acerca del Obispo. Se trata de la obra de la Iglesia que se está realizando en nuestra diócesis. No es una organización externa a la que apoyamos, sino a nuestra propia familia en Cristo.

Para mí, al dar a la Apelación Anual del Obispo y a nuestra parroquia, yo pienso como algo más parecido a poner dinero en mi cuenta de ahorros en vez de regalarlo a otra persona. Cuando pongo dinero en mi cuenta de ahorros o jubilación, significa que no está disponible para gastar de inmediato, así que es de alguna manera es un gasto, pero al final del día va estar allí para mí o mi familia si están en necesidad. Compartir nuestras bendiciones materiales con Dios a través de su Iglesia es compartir con nuestra propia familia.
