Pastor's Message: September 6, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Many of you will doubtless remember Fr. Andrew Hochstetler, O.F.M. Conv., whose family lives here in Goshen and is a friar of the Conventual Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land. Father has helped with Masses here at St. John’s in the past while he was studying at Notre Dame or visiting his family in Goshen. (He is now studying at Oxford University, England.) Father was not able to come home for the summer so went to be with his religious family in Lebanon. After the recent explosion in Beirut, he and the other friars are safe, and they are helping the people of Beirut to recover from the explosion. Please pray for him and for the people he is serving in Lebanon!

Tomorrow is Labor Day, and we offer prayers especially for the safety of all workers at this time. Many people continue working in conditions that expose them to the novel coronavirus in order to provide essential services or to keep our economy going. We are thankful to them and pray for their protection. We also pray that all people throughout the world will enjoy the right to meaningful work that helps them to fulfill their vocations. Because of the holiday, there will be no morning Mass.

A reminder that the 6 p.m. Mass on Wednesdays is in English. This gives an opportunity to come to daily Mass to those who are not able to join us in the mornings. Daily Mass could be a great option for those who are concerned about being at Mass with a large group of people on Sundays. Mass is short (usually 30 minutes) and attendance is light. Monday and Friday mornings are also lightly attended, as well as all evenings except Thursdays. (Tuesday through Thursday we welcome children from our parish school at the 8 a.m. Mass so attendance is obviously higher.) Confession is also available before morning Masses and after evening Masses. Confession lines are usually non-existent in the mornings and light Monday – Wednesday evenings. Expect a wait on Thursday and Friday evenings.

When I started college, my mother committed to going to daily Mass at least once a week to pray that I would keep the faith that my family, our parish, and our Catholic schools instilled in me. I never missed a single Sunday Mass those four years in college. I’m sure her prayers had something to do with that. Maybe there is someone in your life for whom you could dedicate a similar devotion to weekday Mass and Confession?

Recent read: Jesus of Nazareth, Part II by Benedict XVI. This was my spiritual reading for Holy Week and Easter. This volume of Benedict’s three part Jesus of Nazareth series focuses on Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Muchos de ustedes recordarán sin duda al P. Andrew Hochstetler, O.F.M. Conv., cuya familia vive aquí en Goshen y es un fraile de la Custodia Franciscana Conventual de Tierra Santa.
