Pastor's Column: August 9, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

You may recall that Bishop Rhoades’s general dispensation of all the faithful from the obligation to attend Holy Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation originally extended until August 15th. Bishop Rhoades has announced that this dispensation will now be extended until November 1st – unless further developments determine otherwise. It is good for us to consider why the Bishop has extended this dispensation even though we are able to celebrate Mass with social distancing and other precautions in place. First, we know that many churches – including at times here at St. John’s – we cannot accommodate all of the people we are used to expecting at Holy Mass with distancing practices in place. Second, the Bishop wants to reassure the faithful for whom it would not be prudent to attend Mass at this time due to their own health situation or that of their families that they are not falling into mortal sin by not attending Mass.

Dispensations from the obligation to attend Mass have been granted from time to time in the past by Bishops or pastors in singular cases. I am fairly sure that the current situation of general dispensations of entire dioceses is without precedent – just like so much else that we have been experiencing these past few months. While each of us clearly has the right to take advantage of this dispensation, it would be good for us to consider our decision regarding whether or not to attend Holy Mass in person in light of our other behaviors. Am I attending social gatherings, going out to eat, sending my children to school or day care, or otherwise interacting with groups of people outside my own household? With the caution we are taking at Mass (especially with masks, physical distancing practices, restraint regarding music, sanitizing surfaces, etc.) I have a hard time imagining why someone would feel comfortable eating in a restaurant but would not feel comfortable at Mass here at St. John’s.

This Saturday, August 15, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since it falls on a Saturday it is not a holy day of obligation this year. It would still be great for us to take the time to honor our Blessed Mother on this day, though. We will have Mass in English at 12:00 p.m. and the regular Saturday evening Mass in Spanish at 6 p.m. will be the Mass of the Assumption rather than the normal Sunday anticipated Mass. (As we have all been dispensed from the obligation it does not matter how Masses are “counted” this year.)

Father Jose will be away on a well-deserved vacation August 10-21. Thank you for your patience with me as I cover many Masses and confessions in his absence.

We expect Mass attendance will continue increasing next Sunday with the resumption of catechesis. We will add another Mass at 3 p.m. in Spanish on an experimental basis beginning next Sunday, August 16.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Recordarán que la dispensación general del Monseñor Rhoades de asistir a la Santa Misa los domingos y los días santos de obligación se extendieron originalmente hasta el 15 de agosto. El Monseñor Rhoades ha anunciado que esta dispensación se extenderá hasta el 1 de noviembre, a menos que los acontecimientos posteriores determinen lo contrario. Es bueno considerar por qué el Obispo ha extendido esta dispensación a pesar de que somos capaces de celebrar la Misa con distanciamiento social y otras precauciones en su lugar. En primer lugar, sabemos que muchas iglesias, incluso a veces aquí en San Juan, no podemos acomodar a todas las personas a las que estamos acostumbrados en la Santa Misa con prácticas de distanciamiento en su lugar. En segundo lugar, el Obispo quiere tranquilizar a los fieles para los que no sería prudente asistir a la Misa en este momento debido a su propia situación de salud o a la de sus familias de que no están cayendo en el pecado mortal al no asistir a la Misa.

Las dispensaciones de la obligación de asistir a la Misa han sido concedidas de vez en cuando por los Obispos o pastores en casos singulares. Estoy seguro de que la situación actual de las dispensaciones generales de diócesis enteras no tiene precedentes, justo como hemos estado experimentando estos últimos meses. Aunque cada uno de nosotros tiene claramente el derecho de aprovechar esta dispensación, sería bueno que consideráramos nuestra decisión sobre si asistir o no a la Santa Misa en persona en vista de nuestros otros comportamientos. ¿Estoy asistiendo a reuniones sociales, salgo a comer, envío a mis hijos a la escuela o guardería, o interactuó de otra manera con grupos de personas fuera de mi propia casa? Con las precauciónes que estamos tomando en las Misas (especialmente con mascarillas, prácticas de distanciamiento físico, restricción en cuanto a la música, superficies desinfectantes, etc.) Me cuesta imaginar por qué alguien se sentiría cómodo comiendo en un restaurante pero no me sentiría cómodo en la misa aquí en San Juan.

Este sábado, 15 de agosto, es la solemnidad de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María. Dado que cae un sábado no es un día santo de obligación este año. Sin embargo, sería genial para nosotros tomarnos el tiempo para honrar a nuestra Santísima Madre en este día. Tendremos Misa en inglés a las 12:00 p.m. y la misa regular del sábado por la noche en español a las 6 p.m. será la Misa de la Asunción en lugar de la Misa anticipada normal del domingo. (Como todos hemos sido dispensados de la obligación no importa cómo se "cuenten" las Misas este año.)

El P. José estará ausente en unas merecidas vacaciones del 10 al 21 de agosto. Gracias por su paciencia conmigo, ya que cubro muchas Misas y confesiones en su ausencia.

Esperamos que la asistencia a la Misa siga aumentando el próximo domingo con la reanudación de la catequesis. Añadiremos otra Misa a las 3 p.m. en español de forma experimental a partir del próximo domingo 16 de agosto.
