“On the day before he was to suffer for our salvation and the salvation of all, that is today, he took bread in his holy and venerable hands, and with eyes raised to heaven to you, O God, his almighty Father, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.”

On this holy night, we re-live the night when our Lord gathered his twelve apostles in the upper room to give His body and blood to them for the first time under the appearances of bread and wine. Christ could have done this at any time during His ministry on earth, but He chose this night, the night when He would give His earthly body over to those who would revile, curse, and torture It, to give His glorified body to us.

En esta noche santa, volvemos a vivir la noche en que nuestro Señor reunió a sus doce apóstoles en el cenáculo para darles Su Cuerpo y Sangre para la primera vez. Lo podría haber hecho en cualquier otro momento de su ministerio, pero eligió hacerlo esta noche, la noche en que entregaría su cuerpo terrenal a los que le denigrarían, le blasfemarían, le torturarían, para darnos su cuerpo glorificado.

This is a night of mixed emotions, to say the least. We began Mass with a spirit of celebration, singing the Gloria for the first time since the beginning of Lent, ringing all the bells of the church, which will now be silent for the next two days. But now the sacred liturgy settles into a somber mood as we reflect upon this great mystery – the Body given to us is the same Body that will be betrayed by the one who leaves the feast to do quickly what he has decided to do. That the Blood that will be given to us is the Blood He begins to shed this night at Gethsemane.

Es una noche de emociones mezcladas. Empezamos la Misa con un espíritu de celebración, cantando la Gloria por la primera vez desde el inicio de Cuaresma, tocando todas las campanas de la Iglesia, que ya quedarán en silencio para los próximos dos días. Pero ahora, la sagrada liturgia se posa en un estado de ánima sombrío mientras que reflejamos sobre la solemnidad del misterio que vamos a conmemorar – que el Cuerpo que nos dará es el mismo que dará a sus persecutores para crucificar, que la Sangre que nos dará es el mismo que comienza a derramar en el orto de los olivas.

To give His body to us, it must be given to them. In order for the bread of life to be broken and given to us, He must be broken and given to them. This is why at every Holy Mass the entirety of Christ’s Paschal Mystery is present – the last supper, but also His suffering and death, and even His glorious Resurrection, in virtue of which He is still present throughout the world in the Blessed Sacrament.

Para darnos su Cuerpo a nosotros, tiene que darlo a ellos. Para que el pan de vida esté roto y dado a nosotros, Él tiene que estar roto y dado a ellos. Es por esto que en cada celebración de la Santa Misa está presente la integridad del Misterio Pascual de Cristo – la Ultima Cena, pero también sus sufrimientos y muerte, y también su Resurrección gloriosa, en virtud del cual Él está todavía presente por todo el mundo en el Santísimo Sacramento.

In the light of this mystery we can understand the other dramatic gesture of this night: the washing of the feet of the twelve apostles. This is not just a moralizing gesture, a lesson about the importance of service. Rather, it is about Christ’s abasement, His humbling Himself. He must become a servant in order to be the suffering servant foretold by the prophet Isaiah.

En la luz de este misterio podemos entender el otro gesto dramático de esta noche: cuando lave los pies de los Apóstoles. No es solamente un gesto moralizante, una lección sobre la importancia del servicio. Mucho más, se trata de su rebajamiento, el humillarse a Sí mismo. Debe ser un siervo para ser el servo sufriente predicho por el profeta.

Christ’s gesture recalls too the ordination of the Apostles on this night, which took simultaneously as He gives them His Body. His example instructs them not only that they must be humble servants, but that they must give their own bodies over, so that in their very person they too might be blessed, broken, and given. This night, we see the intrinsic connection between the Eucharist and the Priesthood, an invitation to Christ’s sacred ministers to share in His priesthood in a unique way.

Este gesto de Cristo nos recuerda también de la ordenación de los Apóstoles en esta noche, que tuvo lugar simultáneamente que les dio Su cuerpo y Sangre. Su ejemplo les enseña no solamente que deben de ser siervos humildes, sino que deben de entregar sus propios cuerpos, para que en sus propias personas pueden ser benditos, rotos y dados – igual del pan Eucarístico que están llamados a imitar. Esta noche, vemos la conexión intrínseca entre la Eucaristía y el Sacerdocio, una invitación a los ministros de Cristo a participar en su sacerdocio en una manera absolutamente única.

On this holy night, in which we begin the Sacred Paschal Triduum, we rejoice to receive the Lord’s holy Body and Blood (some of us even for the first time), and we grieve to see His betrayal. Such should be our disposition at every Holy Mass – sorrow for the sins that led Him to give Himself for us, and joy at the greatness of the gifts that He offers. Tonight, He does not give us some thing, He gives us Himself.

En esta noche santa, en que empezamos el Sagrado Triduo Pascual, nos jubilamos a recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor (unos de nosotros por la primera vez), y también nos apenamos a ver su traición. Tal disposición debemos tener un cada Santa Misa – pena por los pecados que le llevaron a entregarse por nosotros, y gozo por la grandeza de los dones que nos ofrece. Esta noche, no nos da algo, nos da Si mismo.
